Reverse Roll: To perform an unlocked backroll towards the opponent, leaving you facing their back, making it an easy backstab and preventing the traditional Roll BS punish. Done by unlocking while moving backwards a split second before you roll.

Well, having come upon this and seeing as no one has discussed this technique. What do you think of it? Does it only promote backstabbing or mindgames (since you can be backstabbed if your opponent predicts it?)? Is it really just fanciness with no real difference?

Makes life for slow swinging weapons even worse. It's already not hard to Roll BS most of the heavier weapons, reverse rolling only makes it easier. So scurred to swing my BKGA

Against some faster swinging weapons this will actually just get you BSed. Falchion spam est bestest.

I find it most useful for punishing WoGs that aren't DAed

I wanted to try doing kick > reverse roll to see if you could consistently get a staggerstab out of it.

Was too lazy to ever learn how to do it, though.

@Jansports: this is a lot more useful vs. fast weapons than slow weapons. IMO not worth the effort vs. clay/kumo/ultras, but the extra time can actually make a difference vs. kats/spears/curvies.

I've been ravioli stepping the faster weapons, as it's less travel time to the BS, and many of the non spear faster weapons are short enough that the backstep is enough to get behind them. I am hesitant to try this too much against spears cause non turtle R1 spam from a 1H spear is actually fairly quick and it "feels" to me like the reverse roll wont go far enough if I roll from the tip where I couldn't parry but I'm not too sure because despite how OP everyone thinks spears are I rarely see them

I've heard of people that can do it to some crazy effect, but I've never really met someone who can do it every single time they attempt it, perhaps it's a bit unreasonable or maybe the people I've met just aren't skilled in using that move. I know on my fat roll toons, while in some instances it's great, whenever I miss it and do a normal roll I'm basically *** unless using a Large Club of some sort.

Okay maybe it depends on your definition of a gimmick. I don't consider it a gimmick since it has actual applications in real matches and isn't just there to impress chumps watching your youtube videos (though it will do that, too).
