Great Scythe Tutorship Empty Great Scythe Tutorship

Post by CephGabriel Sun May 26, 2013 7:28 am

I had a sort of epiphany the other day, I was invading in the burg and started noticing that practically everyone I came across was either wielding a katana or some greatsword (occasionally golden tracer). As I was wielding the chaos blade, I started feeling a little guilty, as I hate using things that are common, I prefer being an oddball.

Then this bloke invaded with full dark armour and Scythe like a total RP'er (I RP with eastern set and katanas etc often). I already had a lot of respect for him.

He proceeded to completely tear me up with blind angling, he was all over me. I was aghast, how had I never used such a graceful fighting method.

Would anyone like to teach me the great art of how to use the great scythe?

The art of the great scythe is generally spamming wild dashing attacks and R2 whilst 2h'ed
DA'ing with it isn't that hard - you clip the enemies back when you dash past with the attack pretty often.

Scythes are pretty common weapons. Plus they are crazy good.

In all my PvPing I have only come across one guy using the Great Scythe, and I'm 120 on Xbox.

Dunno why but its rare for me. Thanks for the help I'm gonna give it a go tomorrow.

In my opinion, tis the best dex weapon around. Dead angles like a beast. Enjoy!

Jump attack has got a beautiful dead angle if it connects, although you're screwed if you miss or bump into someone with decent poise.

    Do you never PvP? lol

Its easier to wield than to defend against. Key moves are :

unlocked/locked running 2hr1, and ALSO backstep r1s are deadly

unlocked and aimed 2hr2, combo-ed with follow up r2

Roll r1s can be parried easily, but few people expect a roll r2, which covers tons of ground

r1 spams are deceptively fast when the first hit connects

Odd, so this weapon is actually really commonly used and I've never come across it in like 60 hours of PvP... errr god knows why.

Well its rare for whomever I PvP so I count it as rare for me. Interesting vid man, thanks

If you want to learn to use the Great Scythe, the first step is to be comfy with fighting without lock on. once you get there the GScythe feels smooth. while 1h you can treat it as a pseudo spear, it's 1hr1 has good range isn't too slow but has little to no horizontal coverage. the 1hr2 is slower it's max range is a little less but it covers much more horizontal space. Alternating between these two you can pressure your opponent, you can punish or catch back rolls with the r1 easily, and you can swap to 2h and Running attack or 2hr2 dead angle if they are strafing/rolling sideways where the 1hr1 wont get em.

That's the basics, the great scythe controls a great deal of space, which makes it perfect to pressuring opponents into bad positions. It's used with Pyro and Buffed on Int builds so often because Magic can take the most advantage of putting you opponent where you want them (huge CSS damage, or GCFB or GC or HCSM or Dark Bead or or or or)

I'm a pyro, sadly didn't stick any points into faith and I'm 120 now so ah well. I'll see if I can pair it with Great Combustion and the like.

Watched some videos of the scythe. It's such a refreshing unusual attack style

If you hit with GCFB (since you said you have pyro) you can often combo into a running attack(2h) and if that running attack breaks their poise you can often get a GC

ah ok.. makes sense to me, I seem to be pretty bad at hitting people with GCFB, I'll give it my best shot. Literally

its good, but im surprised you don't see it every time you either duel someone or invade someone, that thing is everywhere thanks to the vid pendant posted above. just unlock and dead angle and you should be good, don't spam the running attack cause a decent pvp'er will parry you. I still think the reg scythe is better in everyway but don't tell anyone, better ar, better crits and yes, better moveset but that's just me.

I already tried out normal scythe, sadly just don't like it, move set is kinda irritating and I'm a huge aesthetics person, scythe looks boring.

Ill give it another go though

The thing I don't get is everybody thinks a weapon has to have a horizontal swing to dead angle. That's why great scythes and greatswords are highly revered for them. But a LOT of other weapons can dead angle too, without a horizontal swing.

I personally think great scythe is a combination of overpowered and overrated. If you're looking for a graceful weapon, try a rapier, dagger, or curved sword.

Curved swords are one of the best for dead angles, just try not to get spammy with them or you'll get a lot of hatemail.

Rapiers are very fluid and fast, and the vanilla has high crit. bonus.

And Daggers are exceptionally fast, and will tear your opponent down 500 HP before they even realize you've been hitting them.

Just take your time and plan your attacks. Play unlocked. Don't spam or you will get parried. That's about it.

    +1

If you play on PC this thing in everywhere, it's extremely popular with newer looking players too (when I say that I mean players that appear like they're less familiar with PvP than the regular people I verse).
I have no doubt that this is due to a certain couple of vids praising the weapon, and the fact that it's essentially a dex weapon that deals better damage than many strength weapons, all while weighing sweet f*** all.

    Pros.
    1. Good scaling with the ever popular Dex
    2. Great reach in the grand scheme of things.
    3. One of the better movesets of the polearm class of weapons (I personally cannot stand the lucern's swings nor do I care for the garg halberd)
    4. Dead Angles on accident.
    5. Can be found right as you start the game if you know where to look
    6. 5.0 weight

    Cons
    1. Suffers whiff stumble (albeit not as bad as some other halberds)
    2. Awkward rolling attack

    No wonder it's popular

I don't see people using it too often, and I usually pvp on PC. I made a build for it once, wore full gold hemmed, and pvp'd with it a couple weeks. Once, I dueled someone using the exact same equipment. It was an awesome reaper showdown! Great Scythe Tutorship 209773692

Most of the great scythe's swings are pretty slow, but the two-handed dash attack is surprisingly quick. Most people who have no experience with the weapon never see it coming. They're like, *Whoooshh* "OMG you're behind m-" *dead*

I love the 2 hand R2, have taken down a bundle of people using TWOP with a quick 2handed R2 and then a followup....! People do not expect your character to do a dash after the have cast TWOP it can result in hilarity.
