The Current Gen Issue... Empty The Current Gen Issue...

Post by ChaosMoogle Tue Jun 11, 2013 10:15 am

Hi everyone. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I haven't been here in a long time lol, and I didn't see it in the first few thread pages.

Is noone else concerned about the fact that it's releasing for 360/PS3 and not Xbox One/PS4!? I mean the release date is well into the next gen time scale, and I for one won't want to be hanging around on the old gen of consoles when there new ones are out. Sure I'll do it, because it's Dark Souls, but I don't know how active it's going to be because of this.

I think that overall, it's a really stupid decision and I hope it doesn't mess up the game sad

Thought about it, but I think I'm fine since I already have a PS3. Shrug

Also, we don't know for sure that either of them won't be backwards compatible.

A good way of looking at it, is that probably only the fans are actually going to buy it, because I don't imagine many others are going to want to buy old gen games if they have a new gen console. The downside of that is that I doubt it's going to sell well, and won't be very well populated. Let's hope the DkS like game is for for next gen at least.

From everything we know about the architecture of the new consoles, backwards comparability isn't possible without a complete redesign of the game, which is extremely unlikely to happen because if they were going to do that they would just release it on Xbone/PS4.

I'll wait till the conference later today, but I think they might have announced that already if it was going to happen. The Microsoft E3 conference yesterday said it was being developed for 360, and the official page, gamespot and wikipedia all say 360/PS3. I hope I'm wrong though sad

It's still possible that they change to PS4 and Xbox One, and if they say the won't...

It may be available through the market and PSN store, so we may be able to just download it anyway.

Nope. I don't see why people think a new console coming out makes the older one instantly dead. Do you know how well the PS3 did at launch? Not good. And the PS2 lasted 12 years in production, 6 of those after the PS3. The PS4 looks more promising for launch success but it won't kill its predecessor out the door. Don't know about Xbox history and don't care to.

Fans of DaS will buy DaS2. So what if it's on PS3/360? They already own the console so there's no problem there and that goes the same for many new players. Personally, I'm glad it's not on next gen since buying a new console isn't something I'm keen on doing at the moment. Will they ever convert DaS/DaS2 to next gen consoles? Maybe, which would benefit the youngest players who only now are squawking at their parents for video games.

Yes, PC users laugh at the console gamers even though DaS port wasn't so hot in the beginning and hackers have the easiest time there. Console gamers get to laugh back with exclusives sometimes though The Current Gen Issue... 3596227959

PS3 didn't sell well because it was ridiculously expensive, both at launch and for a good while later. Ps4 obviously isn't going to have that problem since it's launch price is considerably cheaper than the PS3's was.

Yes fans will buy it, but as we all know, FromSoft are trying to appeal to a wider audience with this title. Whilst I'm sure they have, whether that translates to game sales with everything going on with Xbone/PS4 remains to be seen. I, and am sure many others, are hoping for a big success with DkS2 to help pathe the way for sequels, which I think is going to be jeopardized now.

And besides, DkS2 would be just that little bit more awesome with next gen power...

If it is as much of a hit with the fans as the first two were, and an eventual port to next gen may be in the cards.

As DyingAce stated, it shouldnt be an issue, as everyone who already plans to buy this game already owns either a ps3/360/pc.
People new to the series, on next gen hardware, would probably just piss-n-moan that the graphics are not up to par..

id rather have From work on DkS 3 or spiritual successor than worry about a port to next gen.

no downward compatibility for ps3 - it's impossible because they change cpu architecture. that's for sure!

BUT Sony bought gaikai for that...but i wont buy a cloud Games...lagstabs will be back and worse then ever.

So i'll play 1st pve on pc and then have a look if they have ANY cheat protection....they should've learned from the DkS pc release.....

This. I still play my ps1, the idea of selling my ps3 the second I have a ps4 is absurd. There are hundreds of thousands of games out there, why would I limit myself to current gen? I didn't discover how awesome persona 3 for the ps2 was untill like 2 years ago.

I think I understand where his concern is coming from: When they release this in march 2014, it may be overshadowed by all the buzz of next gen titles, which may lead to it being strictly a cult hit (large majority of purchases made by the already hardcore fans). Sounds fine to me, until I think about the vast sums of money that will be pumped into advertising, thus it has to turn a profit by selling more units to a broader audience.

I don't see it being a problem, but understand the concern. It would certainly sell more if it did not have to compete with ps4/xbox1 games, but will most likely not be a franchise breaker.

Lets hope it out-sells some of the top next gen games; this would surely nail down the success of the series and more sequels would certainly follow

Just what I was about to say lol silly With all the extra cash being thrown into the production of Dks2 and actual marketing, they are going to be expecting better sales than the previous titles, when the game was still relatively unknown. If the game doesn't do well, there is much less chance of a sequel or ports.

Guys, FROM is developing this on PC this time around. It makes no sense not to port it to the next-gen consoles.

We WILL see a port to next-gen. It doesn't make financial sense NOT to when you've already got code that will work on the next-gen. We all know what matters most to the publishers: $$$

Why they haven't announced it at E3 is beyond me, though. Perhaps Sony/Microsoft don't want a third party non-exclusive title overshadowing all their AAA shooters in sales.

They announced at the E3 conference just a couple of hours ago that they had no plans to bring DkS2 to Xbone/PS4. I suppose that's open to interpretation, but I think they might have announced it if asked directly.

That is just really, really odd. Why would they turn down a huge revenue stream?

It makes absolutely no financial sense. The code should be easy to port, and would let people without a high end PC see what their fancy new engine is capable of.

They reasons they gave were even weirder....something about wanting to maximize the potential of the Xbox 360 and PS3... Shrug

In any case, it does look good for current gen consoles (assuming the gameplay we saw is equivalent). Still it is a little confusing. Could be something to do with Miyazaki's new project, but that's pure speculation.

Could also be that they want to stick to what they know best, which is this gen consoles: they already said they weren't comfortable with PC's when they made the DkS port, but even that's confusing as DkS2 is being built for PC. I have a headache.

The Current Gen Issue... Empty Dark Souls 2

Post by Sinthor Wed Jun 12, 2013 1:24 am

I'm concerned about DS 2 as well, but my concern is just wondering how many of us hard core players and the people who are online all the time and doing trading, etc. are going to be on DS 2. I know I will. I saw a video today from E3 where they wouldn't commit to a release window. All the initial information said "holiday 2013" initially. I was surprised after that to see things saying March 2014. So I wonder if holiday this year isn't a strong possibility. If they already have enough done to be letting people play the demo at E3, why not?

On the port to next gen, don't forget that FROM is a VERY small developer. They do not have a large team at all. It's possible that if DS 2 came to PS4/Xbox One that someone else with more resources would need to do the port?

Initially, I hadn't planned on keeping my PS3 up and running much after I get the PS4, but for Dark Souls 2, I definitely will! I'm also hopeful that at least we might get the ability to play DS 2 on the PS4 via the Gaikai service that's supposed to be up and running in 2014. We'll see.

Are a lot of you here planning on keeping your PS3 or 360 up and running for a good while due to Dark Souls 2? It's odd to me that I would do so, but Dark Souls has kept me coming back to it so often that it's ridiculous. I've never played another game THIS much and had so many different characters and playstyles. I've got characters now that range from lvl 20 to 450 all due to Dark Souls! So how about the rest of you? Plan on playing DS 2 a long time with your "old" hardware?

Dark Souls is making a crap ton of money. Everytime Amazon or Steam does a sale, they run out of keys. That almost never happens, especially with Steam. From may be a small developer right now, but it won't be for too long if Dark Souls 2 hits it out of the park.

The current gen issue for me is that based upon marketing so far I'm planning to buy a PS4 with PSN+ subscription for multiplayer. Currently I have Xbox 360 Gold sub and when the PS4 arrives I'll be keeping my 360 but not continuing with Gold... which means no multiplayer on 360 and so Dark Souls 2 will become a single player experience only.

So for me, I'll have to question the logic of buying any more full price retail games for my 360. Given the x86 architecture of the next gen consoles I'm still hopeful that From will do the right thing here.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one giving thought to this!

I'm in the same situation as you, Mikeo. Currently on 360 with Gold Subscription, and possibility switching to PS4 (though I haven't completely made up my mind yet) - whilst Microsoft dun' goofed on some things, Sony hasn't done anything that has made me go 'Wow!' other than DDR5 RAM, (but that's completely off topic silly )

I would resubscribe to Gold for a while when DkS2 comes out if I did switch to Sony, but I wouldn't would want to keep paying 2 subscriptions on different platforms for long, and so ultimately it would be be Gold that gets the chop. I wasn't even planning on buying any new current gen titles because of this. Guess we'll just have to hope for a port! Petition time....? silly

But Dark Souls uses just P2P connections and not servers.  So can you not play Dark Souls now on the 360 without a Gold subscription?  If not, I can see why you wouldn't want to pay for two memberships.  I sure wouldn't.  But I would for Dark Souls.  Just probably only for maybe 6 months or a year.
