Giants has the best defense in the game.
Guardian is basically Stone Armour.
Havel's is better.
I'd say it's the fourth best.
(Exception to armours that can be upgraded)

Is this your first playthrough? The Stone Set is very heavy and cannot be upgraded, and it's defense/weight ratio is probably pretty bad. A lot of armor gets better than the Stone Set once you upgrade it, with even less weight.

The stone has base stats and is very heavy to wear. I say Giants is the best but that depends on who is using it and it, like many other armor can be upgraded to be very useful in PvP. Really it lacks a lot of good protection that upgraded armor can provide.

^this.
You're in luck mate. There are a few sets of armour in the game which have even higher defense than the stone armour.

I guess it depends on your definition of best and which particular attribute of the armor set you are referring to.
I just found out this weekend that the Eastern Gloves from the Eastern Armor set are brrrrilliant! lightweight and good poise. Never used it before!

Havel's slaughters everything else for poise. Giants has the best defenses and still a ton of poise.
Stone armor is inferior to upgraded sets. Its primary benefit is that it is easily available to anybody who can get into the big forest. As a result, it is a popular pickup in speed runs as a runner can get it for 0 souls/little time investment and use its high magic resistance to tank 4 kings hits while dishing out as much dps to them as possible.
For a normal playthrough it is only worth wearing until you can pick up or upgrade better stuff, and only if you don't mind being heavy.

the stone set is perfect until you reach anorlondo, where you have the following armors available:
GIANTS (purchased from the giants black smith, requires twinkling titanite to upgrade,)
HAVELS (found in a well hidden chest, less def than giants but has the most poise in the game)
Black iron (found on a corpse, lighter than giants with about 10-20 less def and a bit less poise)
SMOUGHS (a golden fat suit, slightly heavier than giants with similar defense but requires no upgrading)
smoughs armor is available for purchase if you kill the area boss in the correct manner.

Stone is definitely not the best. Sure, when you get it on your first playthrough it may seem amazing, but just wait until you encounter Havel's armour. That, or Giants. But as far as heavy armour goes for beginning players, Stone is decent.~

What Dibs said really. Basically, if you acquire stone armour as early as you can, its far better than any other armour you can get at that point (hell, if you have the master key you can get it before killing the taurus demon). Consequently, it makes all the early bosses a piece of cake.
By the way, goldenick: are all those smileys really necessary? Come to think of it, are all of those question & exclamation marks really necessary?

Stone Armor is the "best" armor because it is the early game Heavy Armor. It is likely you will find this set a bit before you commonly start locating Heavy Armor sets. In terms of its ranking in Heavy Armor, I do place it roughly in the top 5. The "best" armors in the game is a competition in between Havel's and Giant's.

Yeah, but to upgrade giants full you need 8 pieces of twink for each piece. 4 pieces, 8 for each = 32 twink. If you buy it all, that's 240 000 souls, not easy to come by for a beginner.
If you're ranking Giant's as number 1, I'd rank black iron as #3 (just below havel's for the poise). Guardian Helm is great IMO as well. First couple of times playing, Stone was the go to armour for me whenever I needed high defence. Later when the game became easy and souls were easy to come by, I never touched it.
Upgrading armour is really expensive and time consuming if you do it legit. The amount of titanite chunks and slabs you need are silly. Best to go with armour that needs upgrading with Twink in my opinion; I hate farming for chunks.

Since they patched that you can buy twinkling and it can take its equipment all the way to max upgrades it is probably the most convenient upgrade path in the game; you can upgrade anything on that path easily with only souls. That isn't true for anything needing chunks or slabs of any variety...in fact the only other upgrade path max attainable with only souls is raw, and that doesn't work for armor lol.
PvP brings in a lot of souls as an invader, but ascended pyro glove with bellowing + symbol of avarice + serpent ring spamming fire tempests on the phalanxes in the painted world will rake in souls at laughably fast speeds also. That's probably the fastest legit way to hit SL 100 or 120; run the game on NG and NG+, get a maxed pyro glove from the souls you rake in (IE put nothing into anything else other than pyro glove + 1 attunement slot...maybe 2), then just farm painted world.
Symbol of avarice can be a pain sometimes but the ring isn't that hard to get and overkilling the phalanx isn't either. It probably wouldn't take that long to farm up 1mil souls+ for those that care...and pyro runs are pretty easy so this is probably the most accessible way to legit farm a character to 100 or 120 w/o help.

If you know this, then you wouldn't think stone is best. Putting the cart before the horse.

I love the stone chest piece.
It's jade and looks very samurai. I use it often for pve.
