i think what matters is that the host you are 'invading' has not killed the boss, not you

My understanding is this. For a gravelord to spread misery via the eye of death he has to be eligible for invasion. In other words area boss alive and in human form. Since the curse moves with you, you can always drop the eye, (execpt when being invaded) So just because you can use the eye it does not mean you are spreading misery.
