One very important thing people seem to have missed is the fact that dragons breathe fire. According to the legend, the "first flame" gave rise to the beings we know in dark souls, beings of disparity. Any thoughts?
In addition, the "serpent" is described as an imperfect dragon, and a symbol of the undead (who according to the fireball description, naturally fear flame). We can assume that the primordial serpent(s) existed during the age of ancients and you could further speculate that their relationship with dragons would *symbolize* the undeads' relationship with the Lords.
