You gain a humanity.
Humanity increases cures resistant.
When resistance in something is increased a lot, it shows.
For example, it is the same as when you equip that cursebite ring.

It's because when a resistance increases, the 0 becomes whatever is your new resistance minus the original value.
repeatedly equipping and unequipping bloodshield for example fills your status bars to a point where anything can inflict curse/poison/bleed/toxin in one hit.

It's a mechanic, you're not getting cursed, your curse resistance is just going up.

Maybe when you take the humanity dropped by a Darkwraith you're becoming closer to the darkness/corruption of the Abyss, since you're taking part of something that is from the Abyss?
