Abbreviations and Acronyms

I am fairly new to Dark Souls. I would love to request that some of the shorthand that goes on in the forums be explained to help is noobs. Some of the references i just dont get because I have never seen the weapon or I am just not experienced with the game as mich as others. It comes with time and I know it can often be forgotten that not everybody knows what an msgs is, or what wog standa for. Thanks

It's not exhaustive, so this thread will be a good resource for anything not on that list.

Acronyms on that page:
AOE - Area of Effect
BKGA- Black Knight Great Axe
BKGS- Black Knight Greatsword
BKH- Black Knight Halberd
BKS- Black Knight Sword
BS- Back Stab
BP- Black Phantom
CHSM- Crystal Homing Soul Mass
CMW- Crystal Magic Weapon
CSS- Crystal Soul Spear
DMB- Dark Moon Blade
DSS- Dragon Slayer Spear
DWGR- Dark Wood Grain Ring
Flipper/flipping - A human player wearing the DWGR, which turns their roll animation into a faster and more effective ninja-esque flip
Griefer - A low level PvP invader with very good equipment and/or skill that focuses on invading lower level areas such as the Undead Burg or Parish
GSoA- Great Sword of Artorias
HSM- Homing Soul Mass
NPC- Non-Player Character (i.e., a computer controlled entity)
OHKO - One Hit Knock Out
PvE- Player versus Engine/Environment
PvP- Player versus Player
RoFP (or "ring of fap") - Ring of Favor and Protection
SL- Soul Level
Sunbro- A Warrior of Sunlight covenant member
TWoP- Tranquil Walk of Peace
WoG- Wrath of the Gods

I do believe a griefer is merely anyone who plays in a style which is intended to cause grief to others, PvP farmers who gang bang, low level invaders with lighting weps. It is a very broad term really, even hackers can fall under the term.

I have to agree with this, honestly. Griefing is the process by which a player is playing the game in a way with the specific intent of causing another player a negative experience. It's true that invading in the Burg/Parish with a twinked-out toon is indeed one form of griefing in this game, it is not the only one with things like the aforementioned invader farming and 360 hackers as well as things like lag-switching factoring in. Thank goodness this game doesn't have a Scraping Spear, or we'd have another one to deal with :|

While we don't have a widely-accepted term for low-level invading, I believe the MMO term "twink" applies nicely because it describes an almost identical situation in which a player by some means acquires gear that they should not have until a much later time as a way to gain an unfair advantage over any other player at that level in a PvP setting.

That's a pretty good list. A few missing ones, off the top of my head:

MSGS - Manserpent Greatsword
MLGS - Moonlight Greatsword
GLGS - Greatlord Greatsword (greatswords are popular for acronyms!)
DGH - Demon's Great Hammer
DGA - Demon Great Axe
O&S - Ornstein and Smough

That's all I can think of right now...

There's a lot of these! Would probably be best if we arranged them by category: location, covenant, weapon, spell, etc.

They're currently done alphabetically. But that is a great idea. I'm not in the state of mind to do so hahaha, but I can do it tomorrow I believe.

I went through the wiki pages to find any remaining acronyms we use and haven't listed yet.

CRS - Crystal Ring Shield (rarely ever mentioned anymore, post-nerf!)
GCS - Grass Crest Shield

BSS - Balder Side Sword (not: Broken Straight Sword, Barbed Straight Sword)
*** - Astora's Straight Sword (lol nobody uses this one, but I couldn't resist)
DGM - Demon Great Machete

SMS - Strong Magic Shield (rarely used since it's not broken anymore)
WDB - White Dragon Breath
PW - Power Within
GMB - Great Magic Barrier

RoF - Ring of Fog (rarely used anymore, post-patch; not to be confused with RoFaP, RoFP, Ring of FaP)

BB - Bottomless Box
WSS/ RSS - White sign/ Red Sign

Away From Keyboard--this is an expression people use in all online games, to mean that they stepped away from the game for a moment.

AFK won't be added. Its meant to be abbreviations unique to this forum.
