Well Warband looking on Amazon right now is £13 Uk pounds and the Napolionic Wars DLC is I think £8.99 Uk pounds on Steam.

commander battle is a mode where you command a line of troops agasinst other commanders, but yeah, there are a few hardcore "regiments" that really get into the whole gentlemans war game with commanding officers and such
