I did it. It was fun, I was Online, but when Dark Souls launched, it was plagued with online issues and it was like if you were playing offline mode (except for messages, which I almost didn't read at all).
Also it's not random. This game has various areas, which are linear. You can choose which to go first, but you will need to go to every one to complete the game. It's not that hard to figure out where to go. The cool thing was that it's hard to survive and face the surprises that the areas have. Like the Depths. It's very linear. But the cool thing is getting cursed, dying to the Giant Rat, and being annoyed (not killed) by Kirk.
You are supposed to explore. The game is linear, and if you talk to NPCs they give you hints about things. Most areas are VERY linear, BUT they are big enough to give room to explore, it's like, you have the choice between exploring, and going straight and you will get to the boss. There are some exceptions of course. Like the bottom of Blighttown.
