Archery Viable in pvp?
I have been using a lightning composite bow in pvp with lsrge and poisen arrows, its been tough, i wont lie...r there any tricks i dont know about or am i using the wrong bow? I recently fought a guy (5 min ago) who i pretty much poisened and large arrowed 2 death, spear user, but he healed and after i nearly killed him again at nearly 0hp each he caught me attempting to poisen him again

Re: Archery Viable in pvp?
With bows, it's all about knowing when to shoot.
When I go for a bow build, I always have a decent weapon in-case melee comes into play. Picking the wrong time to draw the bow can result in easily getting backstabbed, or opportunities for the opponent to heal. So, rely more on melee rather than a bow for main attacks. But they make great secondary weapons.

Aye, as with large weapons (the Ultra great category) you have to pick your shots.
I know it's possible, I've done it with a +15 pharis bow with poison to take down a lone host that I fought before when he ganked me. It's all about moving constantly and timing your draws. With a composite it should be even easier (chaos composite + fire arrows deals the most damage I think)

Never lightning with a bow. Bows need to follow the same upgrade path of the arrows you'll use. Poison arrows are irrelevent since they're for poisoning more than damage. +15 a bow and use large arrows or +5 Chaos with fire arrows.

And obviously your dex stats will determine whether you go +15 or chaos. High dex is the former, low dex is the latter.

Or occult/divine/enchanted/magic with +40 Int or Faith with Moonlight Arrows. The arrows will deal around 250 damage.

250? That's pretty impressive, I'd say that makes archery if not viable than formidable.

Re: Archery Viable in pvp?
@Damage. The comp bow also gets scaling from strength
If i did a bow build then it would be a 40/40 build using a +15 comp bow.

Assuming opponent has less than 300 magic defense and not 99 humanity. Let's say around 200, which is great for finishing off.

Re: Archery Viable in pvp?
To make it PvP viable:
Use in left hand-Right for kicking
Have 53 poise- allows you to get an escape
Chameleon, Hidden body, Poison/toxic mist (Ink cloud) are all useful spells
Dragonslayer greatbow is the most fun

If it’s a dragon the wolf ring is a must. Unless i really want a challenge.
It’ll be funny if they try to keep their distance thinking that i want to BS them

Eki. Did you know that if you cast tempest while your on the stairs(where you enter the forest) the pillars don’t appear on the stairs, instead they make a huge radius around the stairs.

Yes, yes I do. I just prefer the bridges because it's easier to bait them there. They always expect me to make a mad dash to the shroom parents.

Re: Archery Viable in pvp?
Bows are an incredibly potent force in PvP, and can often seem unstoppable in the right hands. One feature users/victims of a bow with poison arrows love/lament is that phantom hits will still increase build-up. Combined with the (obvious) long range allows to inflict that healthy purple glow almost every time. Should they try to moss while your bow is still out, you'll get a free hit. Otherwise, switch to your alternate arrows to get the most damage with your bow. Makes sure to roll away whenever you find your opponent going for a BS, and you've got the longest range poking tool in Lordran.
Another thing to remember is that using a bow counts as two-handing it, which means your Strength should not only be with a 2:3 ratio with Dexterity for the most commonly used correctly bow, the Composite Bow. Since we know diminishing returns becomes most noticeable at 40, let us cap Dexterity at that and make Strength 27 to get the maximum return for minimum investment. You might be willing to try the Murakumo which scales beautiful with Dexterity, in which case feel free to add one more point to strength to be able to one-hand it.
Below is a video showing the Composite and the Dragonslayer Greatbow being used in real PvP, and it is worth the time to watch it as how to use the bow effectively is showcased well.

Re: Archery Viable in pvp?
You can obviously Enchant/Divine/Chaos/whatever you want to a bow and it'll scale well with whichever arrows, but the only two bows you'll want to consider using are the Composite Bow +15 or the Dragonslayer Bow +5. I could never quite get a hold on the DSB, so I roll with a Composite Bow, which is for quick, precisely-timed shots.
You'll want about 40 Dex (obviously) and 26+ Str. Obviously the Composite Bow scales well with Str and Dex, so upping them is good...but you also automatically get the bonus 2h damage, and so you want to keep the str/dex ratio at about 3:2 or so (doesn't matter which is higher, though I recommend Dex so you can utilize a quick weapon).
Next, you'll want a bunch of poison arrows and heavy arrows. Come PvP time, start off poison, and you actually don't need to time the shots super-carefully - their poison meter goes up even if you hit their shield! So, don't miss...but even if their shield is up, you can creep their meter up arrow-by-arrow until they are poisoned! Once they are poisoned, switch to the heavy arrows and try to hit them - the damage if you hit their shield is generally negligible, so that's why you have to time your shots a little more specifically, now.
You'll obviously want to roll around and dodge dudes, so I recommend keeping yourself at a fast roll (I hate the DWGR, so I'd tell you to Havel or Wolf it if you want some poise). A good trick is actually rolling toward them while they're coming at you - don't roll into their attack, but try to roll behind them instead. More importantly, just keep your movements unpredictable - even if you're dancing around for a minute just dodging them, your poison is draining their HP. It may seem silly, but your maneuvers are important, as firing does leave you quite vulnerable.
Finally, don't be afraid to melee. The more intelligent your choice of melee or ranged combat, the more annoyed/frustrated/off guard you'll catch your opponents! That's not to say constantly switching is a good idea, as I fear you may inconvenience yourself and become predictable...but again, if you can just always keep surprising your enemy, whether it be with a roll, a singular attack, a quick arrow, a poisoned life-draining dance...perhaps some charcoal resin, or a dung pie to the face...the bow becomes quite the deadly weapon.
PS - Utilizing a bow is actually at its best while hosting - as sorcery seems to lag and whiff as an invader, the bow seems to have a bit of a similar lag to it, albeit not as extreme. This is somewhat advantageous, however, as the poison arrows may put invaders at a loss as far as healing goes.
