He's sitting in the hallway before the *** demon between Demon Ruins and Lost Izaleth, sad because he never found his sun and doesn't know what he should do now. I don't have a character near there now, or I'd check exactly, but that's the gist of it. Next encounter is just that you can summon him for Gwyn.

Wait, you can save him? He just showed up behind the t-itanite deamon with a magot on his head screaming about finding sunlight so I smacked him up side the head.. how do you save him?

There's people saying you can clear the maggots in the shortcut (both sides), and if you do that before meeting him at the bonfire after centepede demon you can save him from those maggots and summon him for Gwyn fight. Never actually did it myself though.

You need to enter the Chaos Covenant and gain level 2 at which point you can get to the place from the other direction. This way you can kill the Sunlight Maggot before Solaire gets there and thus he doesnt go all shiny and mad (this must be done before entering Lost Izalith for the first time).
However the only thing you gain from this is that you can summon him for the Gwyn fight.

Solaire makes Gwyn fight a joke, he can tank all Gwyns attacks, land a couple of hits, and you can still attack Gwyn from behind him. The problem is if Solaire starts to shoot some lightning spears, then Gwyn will ignore him and come for you. So either way, learn to parry.
