That tree, which you can see from Firelink is indeed Great Hollow.
You can go to an edge of Firelink and look down. You can see Blighttown. To be exact, you can only see the stench from there, as it clouds your view. When you descend Blighttown itself, you can always look above and see sky. It's just that terrible stench obscuring the light, which makes you think it's inside a cave. Also the entrances make it look like so, but it is indeed on the outside.

I've always thought that the archtrees, with the Ash Lake itself, are below the ground and that the whole world actually sits on their branches, with the Ash Lake being the lowest part of the world.

Yeah, I forgot about the scaffoldings on the otherside. I wonder why the side with Queelagg is Isolated? It's been a while since I explored Blightown, so I forget what it is that blacks your path (either another hill or the great hollow itself).

my thoughts as well, like the great world tree in Norse mythology "Yggdrasil", which also happened to be an ash tree, if my memory serves me right.

The ash lake is also similar to the Nexus in DeS. Those archtrees are like warp portals and it was speculated that perhaps the Stone Dragon is there to guard the passageway out of Lordran.

or it is the serpent that forever gnaws upon the roots of the world.

And why is there an arch tree cut down? I think because of Gwyn. The fight with the dragons and all that, made Gwyn throw his lighting bolt at the tree accidently, destroying a part of the tree

I imagine that it's full of hydras and that that's why the only way into Lordan is through the crow.

Though I doubt that everyone you meet in Lordan came from the Undead Asylum.

Maybe there is water there because blightown was flooded like new londo so maybe all the water seaped down through the great hollow

Ash lake is under the world (or at least Lordran). The area you see in the intro where Gwyn is fighting is a dry version of Ash lake. Somehow it got flooded after the dragons were defeated.

Actually Blighttown isnt in a cave, maybe part of it is. Just go to Blighttown and look up, you can see the sky.

Hey. I believe also that the tree you see from firelink shrine is the great hollow tree. I took some pictures for reference.

I was also thinking about this the other day. When you're at the lowest part of Anor Londo (near the Gwyndolin fight) it seems pretty weird below is only blackness.
