Did anyone manage to save him against gaping dragon? Of course with a normal character, not an overleveled with fully upgraded weapon.

Praise the Sun! I just managed to save him in ng+ using a character that failed to save him in ng myself. I had no idea how much I liked him until I had to kill him. Said character always wears the iron arm bands in his memory. It is almost if not sadder than watching Seiglinde cry over Seigmeir.

A tip if you want to save Solaire in Lost Izalith w/o chaos covenenat +2. At the door that opens the shortcut to lost Izalith stand in the very middle of it and use either poison mist or toxic mist. You might need two or more casts depending on which ng you're in. Use senance rings or crown ring, the one that doubles your casts and half your life.

He kicks like a mule with herpies, but is suprisinlgy easy to dodge and take out. Killed him a good few times while invading in londo.

Dark Fog also works.
