You're thinking too deep. It's simple really. It's the reversed dark magic that cursed/transformed Link into a Deku Scrub. There is an inherent "otherworldness" to it for westerners simply because it originates from a culture that's not their own, though. It's certainly possible to overcome, but also part of why I believe not every anime is a good way to get into the genre. As you said, it's all about finding the right one that doesn't push your subliminal buttons. The rest is just easing yourself into slightly more and more "typically anime" shows as you get used to the little things.
That said Reim, if you ever feel like giving things a chance stop by the anime thread and let us know what kind of shows have turned you off of the genre as well as what you like. I'm sure we can come up with something you could enjoy there

It's easy to see all anime as "weird" to be polite about it. I understand that a lot of anime is just the Japanese equivalent to any western cartoon but the risk of seeing stuff you didn't need to when watching a new show is why most people avoid it.
