Re: There's more to them
Perhaps the last he knew Tarkus hand't beaten the Golem. They're located at opposite ends of the fortress and NPCs don't like to jump. Maybe the merchant hasn't been out of his tower in awhile. Also, the Oscar trailer shows Tarkus remaining behind at the bonfire while Oscar takes off. My take is that Oscar is a little headstrong and is "go go go" while Tarkus prefers to devise a strategy (unlike Siegmeyer who just claims to be thinking about one). Maybe the Golem repelled him at first and he later discovered the Golem's weakness. His tower would give him a good vantage point to study the metal monstrosity.

Fighting him as a phantom with the chosen undead would give him the needed knowledge to defeat him in his own world.

Just to mention Oscar fights the iron golem solo at one point.

Re: There's more to them
Dough we get it. You love Oscar Just razzing ya, how do you know he did it solo though? I'm not saying he didn't I just likely missed something there.
And that's great thinking Fed. My only concern is that the corpse is there even if you don't summon him. However, he could have helped another chosen undead in a different world but died at a point where he overlapped your world. Damn time fluctuation.

Re: There's more to them
Maybe Tarkus came in last minute and an epic Tag Team Match ensued. Sadly, the Iron Golem chose a boulder giant as a partner and since both wouldn't fit in the ring, he fell off before the match got good.

But I think the point is that Solaire has a mustache.

You know what would be awesome? When you play the DLC, just exploring some new areas and suddenly you get the message: Iron Tarkus Invaded. Then you know your time with dark souls is over.

Re: There's more to them
Siegmeyer has a Mustache as well, in fact his is a special character model so he has a big mustache that the player can't have. Or was it his sideburns I'm thinking of?

I've been reading this a while and last night I realized that if this awesome Oscar stuff is true then why would he not tell you there are 2 bells of awakening from the start?

Re: There's more to them
The easy answer? He's dying. He barely has enough strength to ask you to be on your way before passing. He can't offer any information that would lead to specific questions because there's no time. By providing fairly general info then asking you to leave before he becomes an enemy he controls the conversation and accomplishes both his goals (a. get you to carry on his quest, b. not try to kill you).
And welcome!
EDIT: An observation I'm not sure has been stated in this thread one way or another but fits. I've read a few times now that Oscar is injured by the steel ball ambush. Not true (one of the few facts I can say is accurate in all this speculation). You can look through the bars and see him in the same injured pose on the rubble before the wall is broken down. That begs the question though why he's dying....
And welcome!

He is laying on a pile of rubble below a hole in the ceiling and we know he was climbing on the roof. Add it up Skare!

Lol. I didn't say there weren't good clues. I just said it begged the question. Clearly he was trying to commit suicide by sledding down a hill with his beloved.

Re: There's more to them
Not to mention the Asylum demon is up there. So he could have fought it up there also and got wounded, then fell through a hole. Because a fall like that doesn't seem like it would have killed him without some aid.
By the way Dough, would you like me to crop my images of the NPC's and resize them so you could fit them with their descriptions?

Re: There's more to them
I'm pretty sure his death has something to do with a prized red dish getting broken
Edit: Ok I'll stop now. My derail has Oscar in quite a pickle after all. Besides, he really had never had anything to do with Zeena
Back on topic it does seem logical for a rooftop fight. My other thought was that he sustained a grave injury and used thehole to drop in and barricade himself.

Re: There's more to them
Tolvo that would be great.
About Oscar's death its odd that he would hide in a room with ne entrances after he frees you, epsecially considering he needed to tell you more. Its not like he kplanned to have a wall smased open by a steel ball.

He could have talked and handed items through the ruined door and bars. The other benefit is that he would not be a threat to anyone in there.

He also could have just fallen through on accident, so he didn't plan to be in that room.
