Crystal lizards are soooo cute I almost feel sorry for them while I crush them to death to get a f***** slab. Almost. A plush would be so cute

Vagrants: The very-heavy-strategy-guide (pre-patch) says the evilness or goodness of the vagrant depends only by the location. But I'm not sure it's correct. I met only 2 of them:
The first time I was in Anor Londo, on the upper level of the great hall, near the broken window. At the time I didn't even know that vagrants existed, so I just beat him to death without looking at it twice. But I now think it was the good one because I killed it in 2-3 swings and it didn't attack me at all. I got an humanity. (while the strategy guide says this location spawns evil ones).
(Edit: I just noticed the wiki doesn't list this location)
The second time I was in the Parish and I saw it near the altar. Unluckily I still hadn't killed the Knight, so as I was fighting the knight the vagrant followed me outside of the church and shot me its evil needles twice, and I was dead. This time I saw it and it was definitely the evil one.
So, uhm, what determines if the player is good or evil? Sin maybe?
