You don't have to kill him before the DLC.
I usually go to Oolacile right after I'm done with Anor Londo [about Soul Level 55 - 60]
Then I come back and do the rest of the content.

oh, all the guides said that I need to kill the crystal golom at the start of dukes archives to access the DLC, which would mean I need to kill Sif.

you need to kill sif to get the ring for 4 kings, which can be done well after you finish anor londo. those guides lied to you dude

You need to kill the 4 kings to open the fog gates. If I need to kill the golem in Dukes archives, then I have to kill Sif to get to the DLC. Is there some other golem? or some other way to get into Dukes archives? Or do I not need the broken pendant to enter Oolacile?

That is not how the fog gates are opened. The lord vessel is the trigger.

No you need place the lordvessel to have the fog gates open! You kill the 4 kings to have Kaathe show up and be a darkwraith and give him the lordvessel....which will also lower the lord area fog walls...if you don't wanna do that you give the lordvessel to frampt to have the lord areas opened up!

Yes, frampt is a little bit of a "sensitive Sally". For that matter I think Kaathe is to. They just are not much for allowing you to change your mind.

Ya lol they arn't very forgiving are they...nothings worse than doing the 4 kings then accidently saying no to Kaathe
