Saw a post where someone suggest a good move was to take the Warrior, level up strength to 16 as soon as you reach the firelink, then rush down to the Gravelord covenant for the sword.
I did okay running past all the skellies, but for some reason, as soon as I got into that first bonfire room, I saw the Necromancer, and all those hard-wired instincts took over. I started hammering away on him, doing barely any damage, and then got mobbed by skellies. I think I set the world record for the worst speed run in history.
