you cant summon at dukes until your out of jail and have opened the double doors at the top of that ladder

The first time? I take it you mean when he "kills" you.
From the bonfire, up lift.
Past the caster, up the stairs behind him.
Left or right, doesn't matter. Then at the same end of the room the stairs were, flat against the wall on that second floor is a lift.
Use lift, kill enemy, follow tunnel.
In case you haven't found it already.
(Btw if you have trouble with the boars, magic is your friend, as is the gap between the pillar and lift just next to the bonfire).
