Item Phantoms?

Hi folks - noob question for you,

I was re-reading the GameSpot review for Dark Souls (which, BTW, was what originally convinced me to buy this game), and a part of the review caught my eye:

"...One way is to drop an item; left long enough, it will transform into a phantom and wander into someone else's game. Such phantoms leave behind precious items, though they must be vanquished before you can reap your reward."

Is the above true? Can I just drop a shield, ring or even humanity and it will "wander" to the benefit of someone else? What do these phatoms look like? I don't think I've ever seen one...

Look up "Vagrant" on the wiki. There's a few versions but they look like demonic little onions or something.

Pretty much describes it. But they're very rare, so it's not strange that you didn't know about them.

I'm not sure if they're talking about vagrants or phantom drops, but either way they make it sound simple, and it isn't. It IS very cool, mostly because of how rare they are, but the items received are hardly precious. Vagrants drop either a single or a twin humanity, and phantom drops can be a prism stone, Lloyd's Talisman or other random items.

If you find one don't be expecting major loot, but DO keep your guard up, because many of the vagrants can hit you for 2,000+ hp.

So, I shouldn't spend time dropping items I don't need any more around when I'm feeling generous...

You should. The more people that drop the items the more vagrants and phantom items there will be.
