What's under Ash Lake?
Every time I'm in the area, I'm captivated by two feelings. 1) The lake feels unimaginably deep. I feel like anything could jump out of it and pull me under at any moment. I feel like if I fell into it, I'd never get out alive. It makes me scared to get even close to the edge. 2) Not being able to see under the surface makes me imagine that the creepiest most unimaginable creatures live under there. There's something extremely eerie about it. In ocean life, the creatures closer to the service tend to be less creepy and weird than the ones that are deeper underneath. If hydras are what's on the surface, what could be deeper underneath?

Re: What's under Ash Lake?
I guess theres nothing stronger than the hydra since the dragons ruled all that place. Any predator trying to take some dragons meal would be vanquished by hordes of inmortal dragons so... Maybe some really deep water monsters?
Also Cthulu.

I am inclined to believe that the ecology of Ash Lake supports a full food chain from the largest Hydras (or even larger creatures than that) down to the smallest bottom feeder, and everything in between. I'd like to imagine that the immortal dragons are actually nothing compared to the greatest creatures under Ash Lake. Just as the finest lions or hawks, when cast into the water, would be nothing compared to a 60-foot long giant squid. http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/09/world/asia/japan-giant-squid/index.html

Re: What's under Ash Lake?
The biggest animal to ever live is the blue whale at over 90ft
This bottom picture shows some prehistoric sea creatures. The Biggest Megalodon and Giant Mosasaur would be about the same size as the Leedsichthys shown in the Pic.
Assuming that any of those exist and taking into consideration that things in the Dark Souls world tend to be up-scaled... lets just say you definitely don't want to go for a swim. That's also discounting any possible mythological or made up creatures that might lurk in those waters, like our friend the Hydra.

C'thulu "lives" at the bottom of the ocean, is hundreds of meters tall, and is a creature that can drive you insane by trying to rationalize it. Just sayin'

Yeah I what to know too. Ash Lake seem so freaking big and deep. The Black Hydra must not be the only living (or undead) thing in it. There must be some sort of food source for the hydra apart from your character.

Re: What's under Ash Lake?
Maybe there isn't anything "below" Ash Lake. Perhaps the world has a solid core that's covered with ash, and there are "lakes" contained by the ash.
I don't think I'm explaining this well...

Re: What's under Ash Lake?
Okay guys, im REALLY HOPE you dont just ignore this comment, becasue i think it'll prove to be pretty interesting. I believe it is the tomb of the giants. Why? Once you drop into the area where paladin leeroy invades you, look at into the distance. You will see many many trees, and what appears to be the roots. These trees resemble that of those found in ash lake. Here is a video showing what i mean, he doesnt look directly at the area but you can see to the side what i am talking about.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoBNnQt2Zmk
Now watch the ash lake video. The trees clearly show a resemblance with the as well as the misty mildew that surrounds them.

Ash lake is bellow tomb of the giants. Though the place where you fight BOC is actually deeper than ash lake.
