What's under Ash Lake?

That may only be if you go strictly based on in-game distance. You can see that the Duke's Archives are several miles from Anor Londo, but it only takes you about 30 seconds to walk there.

The Dukes Archives is fairly far though, It's about half the length of Anor Londo(with all the shortcuts). Definitely not "miles" though.

I wish we could see ALL the map in the map viewer, not just collision models.
That way we could also see all those moutains and buildings in the distance

The passage to the Archives is not long enough to get to where you can see them from Anor Londo. It just isn't. If one distance can be shortened to not make it a boring walk, why not other distances?

Im pretty sure ash lake is the deeper location excepting lost izalith. Since Lost izalith is basically covered with lava, we can say its deeper.

You take an elevator.

It isn't shortened. If you look at it through the map, it looks as long as it should be.

Alright, this will be long.

Based on the 3D map viewer, the lowest point is the room with BoC in Lost Izalith.

In the opening cinematic, the land of the Ancient Dragons resembles Ash Lake, because of the trees.

Lost Izalith also has the roots of these Archtrees all around it and inside as well. In Demon Ruins, you can observe one of the trees roots covering the roof of Lost Izalith. However that doesn't mean it's located beneath Ash Lake. Simply, by the amount of descending you do to reach Ash lake and Lost Izalith, they should be on the same level, with Lost Izalith slightly above the Ash Lake.

This leads me to the conclusion, that Lost Izalith was one the very first human cities, build on the level of Ash Lake, much before humans ascended through the trees to the Lordran level of the world. Perhpas that's why the city has been forgotten, but I mostly give credits for this to the demon outbreak created by the Flame of Chaos.

Anyway, if both Ash Lake and Lost Izalith reside on similar levels, it means that it isn't below Ash Lake.

What's below there?

Again, in the opening cutscene we can see as the camera travel down one of the Archtree's hollow bark into the place where humans were created. As the narrator states, they came from the Dark. There's also reference on the Dark of the Abyss in the DLC. This leads me to believe that the Abyss is the origin of the Dark and vice versa. If that would be the case, it would mean that the Abyss is actually the darkness below the Ash Lake.

At least that's how I interpret the little information that the game gives me...

Maybe that's why it's all jelly and liquid, that's the water of Ash Lake near the bottom, with milleniums old hydra and dragon poop in it.

Remember, the path outside to the Duke's Archives ends in the trees, the distance from the center(use the lowered elevator as reference) to either the trees or the tower at the wall is roughly the same. Behind the trees the long walkway with the two boars start, which from what I can see and infer from the video and traversing the level, ends somewhere near the base of the mountain.

With an open world setting like this, it's difficult for From to shorten distances like that. One might even say impossible.

Um, question: the whole land of lordran is built over the trees that we can see from Ash Lake? Like a land on the treetops?

That's what I think, but I can't prove it.

It's pretty strange, considering the fact that you also see them trees at the Tomb of the Giants.

Just found the download file. So awesome. Thanks man. I remember awhile ago somebody was arguing with me, and somebody else, that the arch tree you can see from Firelink isn't actually the one that houses the Great Hollow. This is pretty definitive evidence that they were completely 100% wrong. Wish I could remember who that was.

That's what I think. Lordan seems to be too big to fit on only 1 tree. The Great Hollow just seems like the one that was used to reach Lordan, those ladders didn't magically get there.

I'm pretty sure I was a part of that conversation, although I guess it's possible that I just read it and agreed with whoever you were arguing with. At any rate, have you seen the map? It's pretty great. Answering all kinds of my questions.
