Hey guys, recently I've decided to buy a Japanese version of a game because the servers and community are much better than it's North American counterpart. Problem is, as you can probably tell already, they speak japanese over there, and I don't lol.

Thankfully a member of a team I'm going to join over there told me they have a basic understanding of English. I can understand some Japanese words but I don't understand sentences, nor do I understand their symbols.

So, my question is, how would I talk to someone that has a bsic level of undestanding with the English language?

I'm aware the obvious answer is to use simple words and whatnot, but I don't really know what the "simple words" are.

The easiest thing to do is avoid regionally and culturally specific slang terms. Typically people with a basic understanding of english won't know them and they may be confused when you use them.

The best advice I can give you as I work with 3-4 people with a less than basic grasp of english is to be understanding and patient. You may need to explain things that are simple but complex to explain. Also be polite and start trying to learn japanese if you want to form any sort of connection with these people. It goes a long way to show that you are at least trying to understand them while they are trying to understand you. Again at work those same people really warmed up when I began trying to learn spanish and communicated to them in broken spanish rather than english.

Like ErrJon says, refrain from using regionally specific words or mannerisms. Similarly, refrain from using complicated words. If you can't explain what the word means to a 10 year old, don't use it, and if you can, use the longer explanation instead of that word(i.e. words like genuflect, not that you'd use that word in your day to day speech silly)

Avoid contractions. The most difficult for me since English is not my first language are 've and 'd. Say I would have instead of I'd have or I would've.

Don't sarcastically insult their country, trust me, they won't find it funny.
