The Washing Pole Empty The Washing Pole

Post by jabbasway Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:30 pm

Is there something I'm missing? Is the only advantage the length? The Param. Bonuses aren't as good as Uchi or Iaito and the base damage is pretty much the same and the durability sucks. My question is: should I even fool with this weapon if I'm already using the Uchi and Iaito? thank you

I think playing with the Washing Pole is a matter of preference. The length simply means you get the ranged advantage against most weapons, save spears, and the thrusting attacks of greatswords and such. I use the washing pole on my dex/ faith build and that works for me. However you are right it doesn't scale as well as uchi and iato.

There should never be an elemental Katana unless its Divine, Occult, or Magic.

I see the Uchi as the pinnacle for Katanas.

    Then the Iaito.

    Then the Washing Pole.

This is only because I dual wield Kats and dont see the point in putting excess str where it isnt needed.

I find the best use is actually right in the name. If you take the armor set from Anastacia down to Darkroot basin with a white soapstone after you kill the hydra you can wash them and get another set of maiden gear. You need the sword to reach into the deep water though.

Actually the washing pole and Iaito both subscribe to the motto that "there is but an inch between life and death." Swordmasters used to train their entire life in being able to get an extra inch of reach in their technique as one more inch than your opponent meant only one of you walked away. Katana technique often uses the tip primarily rather than hacking with the entire blade. The washing pole is meant to make this easier. The Iaito's quick draw technique required that you anticipated the attack of your opponent and got there first.

i think the washing pole since it requires 20str to 1h is better suited as an alternative weapon for a str build with enough dex. its great for someone who has a 40str 18dex build.

With experience fighting against people who have it I think it is the most difficult weapon to dodge by far, i started using an archer and to make it look more legit im not using a shield so i have to dodge everything silly and i die 90% of the time i fight people using it.

+1 for the soapstones true use skarekrow.
Soon darkroot basin is going to be known as the bath house of Lordran, haha.

I don't always use katanas, but when I do I prefer iaito.

That was my first characters staple, I never liked the washing poles moveset, and uchi just didn't feel as nice as iaito. It comes down to preference, in the end no one dark souls weapon is greater than another in the hands of a player that knows their weapon well.

At 40/40 the WP actually outdamages every other katana except for the Chaos Blade. So you need two stats to be most effective, but it does catch up; never underestimate dual scaling. Its major advantage lies in its range, speed, and bleed; against someone who knows what they're doing, it's almost impossible to win unless you get lucky. It's a hard weapon to fight, I put it just behind the long spears in the list of weapons I don't like to see in my opponent's hands.

builds like this buff and kill everything in 3 hits. (seriously, with the buff active the total ar there is 877, thats a good 500 damage) and the range makes the weapon incredibly difficult to evade untill the buff fades.

Fought one like that today Forum, he was using SLB. I'm getting better at fighting buffers since they get so aggressive you can usually count on them to rush in.

The roll attack dead angles though, and even mild lag can give the weapon huge phantom range. I'm fairly good at dealing with the cannon type builds like that, but when its the washing pole I'm sweating bullets even before the fight starts.

I don't let them buff if I can help it, I bs them out of it. I do the same to great scythe users. I have no problem with buffs but cannon scythe or wp users just arn't fun to fight.

I know, it seems to hit you from every angle and at every range. It's my choice buff tool for Forest hunting alongside the pike, but I wouldn't do that in a duel.

I would/do when I have no interest in any sort of challenge and simply want to kick *** for a while. There's very little most players can do about it. as for 120 that build and http://tinyurl.com/9hs59hg are the builds I firmly believe to be the best to be had, though the spear build will drop off with ptd

That's a terrible build to have to fight, my god. I fought an Ornstein cosplay in the Burg today, I was like "oh ****" when I first saw him but the bastard had the decency to be mid rolling so I handed his *** to him on a silver platter. He wasn't terrible though, he just didn't have the proper stats to use it to its fullest.

Even with a mid roll thats a build to be feared if its stated properly and in half decent hands. They turtle and backpedal and there's almost nothing I can do.

He wasn't bad- he actually landed a fist parry on me which I did not see coming, but the DSS seemed to be doing less damage than usual so I'm guessing it wasn't upgraded fully or his stats were a bit off.

I've made builds using the Pole aswell.

Just to clarify something here.....AR is not everything.

    At 20Str and 40Dex, a +15 Washing Pole will outdamage a +15 Uchigatana/Iaito.

The AR might be lower, but the actual damage done by the weapon is higher.

That's because when you 2h the WP, it treats the AR like you have 30 Str, when you 2h the Uchi it's only a normal damage bonus from 2hing the weapon because it has no Str scaling.

I'm actually surprised the WP isn't as popular as I thought it'd be. I haven't really PVP'ed much, maybe a couple hundred duals, but from my experience the Washing Pole is the least common out of the katanas. Like many others said, its range is a great exchange for the loss of AR with lower stats, but with a 40/40 in STR/DEX it can still get a pretty high AR. Not to mention its RT/R2 is BEASTLY in PVP if you can get the range down. I've learned how to use it just outside of WotG range for the spammers. big grin
