I understand that there are people that don't want to see it and administrators that don't want it on their site but for those that don't mind and want to use it, can they have the ability to turn it on? I'm not asking that I want to use it so I can be frequently fouled mouthed or to see loads of people use it to talk trash to others, it's just that swear words can be used to express context better. Plenty of users here are adults so if age is of concern then would it be ok then to limit swear filter options to people pass eighteen?

I think the filter is more to maintain a certain class on the forum than protect naive eyes

Yes it's to preserve the class, and no the filter is not customizable in that sense. Swear words are catch alls that actually limit creative language expression. Expressing true context is making use of the delectable cornucopia of words that language has provided us.

i actually think it's the other way around, you express yourself better when you don't use foul language.

I'm surprised you said this because really limiting words limit expression. I've even rearrange letters here so they are no longer swear words to the result of them being censored. That's more of an eradication of expression than allowing creative way to express true context. Sure you could try some elaborate to express one word but there will always be something lost because you can't use it.
When I see posts with swear words in, they have **** to replace them. All this means is that I'm guessing sometimes what it is and in the process lose the context because I can't guess what it is. The censorship of words doesn't stop people from doing it and I've seen a few members using methods to get around it.
I understand that a level of class is wanted but surely the administrators and moderators position is to make fair judgement of the context expressed by forum uses. However I know forums are not a democracy so I'm not even going to use this argument, just bringing it to light to see my point of view.

Bro, use your imagination and come up with better ways of expressing things than 'that **** was so *** good', etc

Re: Optional swear filter
I am not bothered by the censoring of expletives - it just allows me to use my diverse linguistic repertoire. Though if insulting people it isn't required to have expletives - that is just crude and lacks creativity. At least describe the issue with better fitting words than 'You sir are a c'nt because much like an *** you are a donkey.'
^^ Note how that insult explains nothing and makes you come across as a cretin.
Use a filter for expletives and EXPAND your vocabulary today!

"Explicit" language originated as words that only common people used. It makes sense to have a filter to preserve the class.

Re: Optional swear filter
Is there a swear filter for languages apart from English? I don't know if an American forum would be able to identify it.

Re: Optional swear filter
Well, that answers my question. The forums will not block swear word that are not in the English language. Which is kind of a shame, considering people can just abuse foreign words, without people knowing what they mean, and they will not be filtered out either.

Re: Optional swear filter
I believe that point is moot as the known ones will be caught by mods and the unknown ones will be understood by none except those who understand the language and its slang.RenegadeCop wrote:Well, that answers my question. Re: Optional swear filter
think is though, it's obvious when a word is a swear.
But if you guys really are so desparate to avoid the filter and use foreign words, they can just add more to the blocker you know, thats how it's been set up.
Originally it didn't even block the big C, S with e on the end, etc
