In other words, it's a copywrite of the old Runescape, except you can do certain things to it, such as make it purely about PvP and give people Barrows and Whips, or you can make it where you have to earn your stuff, or you can make it a spawn server where you need the codes for items, etc. etc. This one just happens to be set in the time of 2005.
Unfortunately, with it being a copywrite, Jagex has the power to say "*** you" and the makers have to shut it down or else they'll get sued.
It's happened to so many good servers that I can't believe that this one is still even around.

Actually, you didn't have to pay, as you had enough items for F2P to effectively not have to pay and still get a good experience. Paying unlocked more items, but you can't use those items in F2P, so Pay to Win never really came to be.

It got shut down, if I recall. But, Old-Scape, the 2005 version, is F2P.
