only thing we know to use them for is feeding to frampt for souls.

All that I am aware is for keeping track of what NG+ you are on and feeding to Frampt, I do believe there was an effort to find some hidden use for them and it came up empty.

They give you some in anor londo too though. So Idk... I wouldn't know where to start as far as finding a purpose for them. Stupid mystery items make me crazy.

There's also a Gold coin in Painted World. So they're around in a few places. But I really think it's just to get souls and to learn a bit about the lore. Kind of lame, yeah...

I can't jump on to double check, but memory is telling me from the building that has the occult ember head across the bridge that is at the base of the tower the harpies are on and jump down, on the climb up the stairs if you check around you'll notice a very tiny platform with some barrels on it, that's the spot. The only other way I can identify this area is that is has the bulk of the rats in the level.

yes... it is hidden behind two barrels, on an independent platform that can only be reached by jumping. The coin is their, though, hiding behind the barrels. The platform is at eye level when by the ladder back from the rat infested structure.
