Perhaps it is the wall of anonymity that helps? The feeling that you can say anything without directly being questioned (With directly I mean with words?)
I atleast have a hard time explaining things while talking directly to other people, and typing is an easier way to directly put your thoughts into words. You can revise the text if it is "wrong".
Some might know each other offline, but just the knowledge that there is something separating you can help.
On a side note. Did you all know that the astronauts in ISS is not in true zro gravity?
