I just started playing League of Legends for the first time, due mostly to people here recommending it to everyone. It's pretty great so far. I just finished the player vs ai match set you up with during training. I'm liking it. I think I'm going to keep playing.
I have enough influence points to buy a champion. Any recommendations? I played the practice battle with Garen and liked him. I think I'd like to buy a melee champion. Wait no I guess I just have enough to buy a low tier champion. I have 500 something

If you're new to the game, Garen is a good start because he doesn't have mana, so you don't have to worry about mana consumption. After you've kind of gotten the ropes down, I'd recommend getting Ashe, then experimenting with the two to learn how different items suit different styles.

Yeah, that sounds good to me. I can afford Garen and it doesn't look like I can afford any of the champions I was checking out before I started playing.

Garen is great for new players because of the fact that he doesn't consume mana while using his abilities, thus you don't have to worry about purchasing mana items, and you can instead focus on other things. Ashe is good because her first ability, which allows her arrows to Slow enemy champions and minions, consumes mana with every shot, so you can learn when to turn it on and when to turn it off for the best mana control. She will also introduce you to long-ranged characters, as well as show you how focusing on one item type can change your playstyle depending on the battle at hand.

I was looking online for good beginner champs and the only ones I saw that I can afford now are Garen and Warwick. I think you're right about Garen though. I already have some experience in using him too, and that's another bonus. I'm going with Garen.

Once you have enough IP to get Ashe, don't worry about buying her. She's a great starter and is well worth it. I'd also recommend getting Kayle, as she's another good starter champion that also happens to be a Support Champion, so you can learn more about items that benefit the whole team rather than just yourself.

Who I really want eventually is Hecarim. When I was still on the fence about downloading I did a little research and it seems like most people don't use him properly but if you can well hes great. I watched some youtube videos of players schooling people with him. I definitely have awhile before I get there though. Seems like everyone likes Ashe too.

Hecarim is extremely hard to get used to, but once you know how to use him, he's a master champion.
I wouldn't recommend playing Hecarim until you've really gotten into the game. You have to know about each item that suits a character and when to use your abilities. Hecarim also has to conserve and don't forget he can support his team quite well. If you haven't indulged yourself into LoL, Hecarim is going to be impossible to master. For now, try focusing on people who are easy to get used to.

Yeah that's pretty much the gist I got too. I can keep play against AI enemies in Co-op vs AI and getting used to things as long as I want right? And do I get xp and influence for doing that?

Yes, you get EXP and IP for doing so, but I'd recommend playing against other players as their tactics aren't straightforward and bland. Honestly, playing against Bots is harder because they rarely die yet get very strong, very quickly. Other people are likely to fall for things such as attacking you while you're beside a turret, which a bot very rarely does.

Whatever you do, don't die to the bots. Unlike real players, bots already know what to use to completely annihilate your team, whereas real players have to strategise to know what to do.
Also, bots troll you. A lot. Watch the grass...
