I pretty much explored everwhere in the place. Do you have to meet him before he goes hollow in order to have him invade on the way to Nico because he didn't invade me.

He invades you on a very small path just before the spot where the gold gate is the lordvessel clears, you'll see Ash Lake through a large hole and it won't be dark anymore, and you also must have the lordvessel. You don't need to have summoned him for Pinwheel for him to invade, also don't knock him off his equipment does not autoclaim.
