Escorting in a multiplayer or offline based game is awful imo. The problem with doing it here poses many problems;
If invaded and invader can hurt npc, they will go after npc 1st, ruining that quest,
If invader cannot harm npc, you have to hope mobs don't kill npc while you try to dispatch invader.
Also, person you are escorting may NOT be fighters, making it even more annoying trying to protect them.

Escort missions have never really been put into any game that well and when they are the game producer has to put a lot of time into developing competent enough AI for who your escorting. This may or may not affect how other aspects of the game may work so personally I would say no to this.
Also, what about that sense of loneliness in Dark Souls? Escorting someone around the game isn't exactly my idea of being alone.

Babysitting is frustrating in less painful games. Add mechanics like no do overs & invaders to make it rage inducing! How I would hate there being items you could only get by successfully escorting someone or it being crucial to game progression. Plus, the AI isn't always the best, is it? I can see it now, my escort somehow falling off a cliff
I did like Ostrava doing something other than standing around & Siegmeyer's events. Siegmeyer also didn't rush into enemies until the last encounter. But a full on escort mission is a big no.

Oh god please no. That is the most annoying type of mission to do in a game, manly cause of crappy AI and all that

No. These escort things never work out well with something going wrong with them and with a game that has no do overs this will fail very bad.

I don't think it would fit the tone of the game... I had a general mistrust of all NPC's, and bonding with them like this ruins the tension that made the game that much more intense... Maybe though...

Escort missions are literally the worst things you could ever place into a video game. An escort mission would probably turn DkSII from what will hopefully be a 10 to a likely 6 at best. Single-handedly.

On the other hand, I choose maybe because it can be done RIGHT by not having faulty AI. I can see how it wouldn't work with Dark Souls II, because the characters in the first one died so quickly if you left them alone except Phantom Sif and Ostrava(Prince Ariona *snicker* 
) from Demon's Souls because they have tons of HP and could DODGE. So I'm just going to put a "maybe" and sit on the fence for this one.
