Duel Wielding or Shields

I was wandering what the community's opinion is on whether or not duel-wielding is better, the same or worse than using a shield. In my opinion they are equal options as a shield allows for solid defense but duel-wielding provides a much wider range of attacks. Also if you do vote please make a post explaining why you chose that option.

EDIT: I'm thinking about in the context of a duel and not hunting gankers or things of that nature.

It's a good question, I think it depends on your playstyle / weapon choices, it's nice to be able to attack with both hands, and nice to be able to set up parry. I use a shield mostly but very rarely use it for blocking, unless I'm using a rapier, i just like to have it. I think shield may just have the edge atm for me, but the jury is still out.

Like Dibs said, it's situational. Depending on what type of build you're up against depends on choice. Can't choose 1 over the other and same doesn't make sense because dual wielding is not the same as shielding. Shielding protects you while dual wielding doesn't protect you as well as shielding. Also, you get a more powerful hit from dual wielding. They aren't the same at all. Can't vote on this one

Dual wielding matches shields in many scenarios, but shields are much more effective in certain ones. I can't think of any scenario where dual-wielding noticably out-performs shields. So I go with shields.

I find myself never using L1. Period. I don't know why. And i don't remember the last time i used a medium shield. It's either dark hand, target shield, or curved sword. I could care less about blocking. I'd rather hit L2. But, seeing as i do use a target shield more than a curved sword for parrying i'd have to say shield. But not for blocking.

I lied, i do block. Maybe once every 5 matches and for a total of 2.5 seconds. That "block the first hit and right away hit L2" for dem r1 spammers. Ya dig.

Me too. I constantly roll around in different directions unlocked to mess with people. They never know what the hell i'm doing until they come at me and get a blade to the face. Works good for BS's and it's not fishing. As soon as they come at me and swing if i'm already rolling i can just roll bs them. They get frustrated and make mistakes. Mind games yo.

I don't BS, I just punish. I learned from NG+7 boss fights that punishing works even better than simply ending the fight faster.

I never really got into using Velka's Rapier much until I forced myself to do it on that build.

When I solo'd Artorias on NG++ with it without healing, and when I learned that the R2's on it have insane phantom damage in PvP, I never looked back.

As a general weapon the Rapier is amazing. It's always funny to watch people get caught off guard by a good Rapier user.

It was even funnier when Sentiel wrecked me with a Rapier, even though I knew not to underestimate them. ;_;

Yeah, i've been destroyed by rapiers quite a few times. Sometimes there was just nothing i could do. Gradually just get poked to death, get frustrated, make mistakes, and die. But, it's been a long time since that's happened. I might brush the cobwebs off my rapier build or make another one.

Do you have a build for just a rapier without magic? Or what would be the best rapier for a dex build? Or should i say what's the best rapier and stats to go with it.

shield is better. It's more useful in more situations, so it's pretty undeniable.

I don't mind duel-wielding a curved sword as a change of pace on occasion, but as far as effectiveness goes....shield all the way.
