There's no official time limit no, you can keep playing for as long as you want....but you'll run out of things to do because the game works in real time.
For example, if you want to expand your house, it'll take a day to complete construction....one full day.
So at a point you've caught all the fish and bugs you care for, all your neighbors are asleep and the damn shops are closed....so all that's left to do is go to bed.
Now....you could always Time Travel, ie using the 3DS's clock to skip forward a day to keep going, but to me that breaks the games flow, and if you do it enough it can actually have serious consequences on your town.
It's not a game to marathon, it's a little time sink that you put a few hours into every day.
