Reaperfan will undoubtably explain things better, but here goes.
I like friendship is Magic because the characters are good, the voice acting is above par, the songs are excellent, the animation is good, the mane six don't act like little girls most of the time and they don't deal with little girl's situations. Plus, it was a show designed to be watchable by the parents of kids as well as the kids themselves.
