Honestly, Gaping and the rat are the only things I can think of. The basilisks just don't have enough heft to literally rip through iron bars.

    NEWCOMER: SPUDSY!

I don't think the Gaping Dragon was locked up. After all, the Gaping Dragon was once a regular dragon that was transformed by hunger. So it would have been too huge fit in that small area.
I think that the giant rat and the basilisks were in the same cage, and the rat broke out, thus freeing the basilisks.

Dragon king Greataxe's description says that he was a descendant of the Everlasting Dragons. So, he was no originally a normal dragon. He could have easily started out the size of the Stone Dragon or even smaller, and was locked up in the cages by Seath. Maybe that channeler was there to try to get it locked up again somehow.

The Blighttown key says that the residents of the Depths locked the door to protect themselves from the residents of Blighttown. Why does the depths have residents? My guess is that it's a sort of slumtown for undead; when the curse first started spreading they were chucked in there, though eventually all of Lordran became the land of the Undead. That explains the communal kitchen/cafeteria as well as prison-like bars and such.

How on earth did I forget to check the keys?

"Key opening the door from the lower Undead Burg to the Depths.
Those banished from the Undead Burg eke out their existence in the Depths, a damp lair with no trace of sunlight. Nearly half of the Depths form a perilous flooded labyrinth."

"Key to the sewer chamber in the Depths.
In any community, a few bad apples are sure to exhibit insatiable greed. If they were turned Undead, and banished to the Depths, would they reconsider their ways?
Use this key to see for yourself."

"Key to Blighttown from the Depths of the Undead Burg. Swallowed by the Gaping Dragon.
As its name suggests, Blighttown is a place of great pestilence. Even the polluted inhabitants of the Depths are aware of its dangers, and built this mighty door in hopes that they could remain safely separated."

Not exactly a prison, but a place they could be quarantined. So its not like there were cells and guards, just an area they could be put and not let out.

Oh this is good, this is very VERY good! I've figured out WHY both endings are bad, and it's all because I looked at my last post! This answers a LOT!

There is a waterfall where the giant rat is, and some holes where water can go down. (Area with the rats that run away from you)

I think it is partially a sewer mixed with something else... as it also leads to Blighttown.

^^This is why I said it's like an underground Venice. The waterways serve a lot of functions, including sewage but there's obviously areas for living etc. and the place where Domhnall is found looks like an old trading outpost that was a little beat up over time. If I recall correctly there's even a wagon wheel or two.

Yup. There's damage everywhere that tells a story. I was mainly referring to original intentions for the location. I haven't been in a while so don't wanna speculate on the damaged areas too heavily since there's many things I would want to look at to decide what I think caused it. However, I just thought of something for the holes in the floor. Two somethings actually. I assume they were covered for the general population and not falling in all the time and such however, the holes could have been
    A. A means to transport goods from floor to floor easily
    B. A ventilation system meant to assist in temperature/humidity/etc. regulations. A lot of older homes in my area have vents between floor (no ductwork, just a hole in the floor basically) that really help moderate the temperatures between floors.
    C. Some other purpose

Or the holes could be a part of the sewage system of that "city."

It could be. I'd have to study the architecture there again to make an informed guess. If those areas are level with doors, etc. then likely not as they would be needed for walkway. I really should head down there I think.

About the channeler, you guys are forgetting that they can warp. Only the ones in the Archives do this, but I assume they are all the same. Seath definitely has his mark in the Depths. I think he's had a part in anything dragon related in contemporary Lordran.

A thought, but what if Gaping WAS a basilisk? The dragons were tough reptiles who could curse people, and the basilisks are similar. Perhaps they are "impure" descendents of dragons like the drakes, and they just changed more. Smaller, less complicated creatures would allow for faster reproduction, leading to more generations and more evolution. Just the thing a dying species would need (Ugh, this makes it seem like I don't get evolution...).
