Why do some corpses disappear?

Why do some corpses disappear and others stay? I don't understand this part and need help

(All shifty) Who needs to know?
If Im correct its mainly sentient people who disappear, and hollows that stay? Also the knights and animals disappear right? Maybe if we got a better list we could find a connection.

Hollowed Npc's disappear. Balder Knights stay. Animals, like curse frogs? They stay. Big cats disappear, mushroom men disappear.

Originally I thought it was things that didnt respawn that disapper, but the silver knights and sentinels proved me wrong. I oculdve sworn the big mushroom men stay.

I thought about it again and you're right, the big mushrooms stay. I distinctly remember flipping their bodies around, though I think the little ones disappear.

Yeah that exactly why i remember them. Im not sure about the smaller ones ut them disappearing makes sense.

I think that disappearing signifies that they are not undead, but something else. Whether they are sentient spirits or a different species they are not undead.

Now the question is what is the difference between an undead and a sentient spirit? Npcs disappear both when they are human and when they're hollow. So what's the difference between them and normal hollows? Aren't regular hollows just people who went hollow?

A sentient spirit would be similar to the Black Knights which were burned to ashes at the kindling of the first flame. I think that the NPC's are similar to invades, because they are around unless you kill them or are killed by the game at which point they don't spawn, this could just be game mechanics but i'm sure they wouldn't just do that without a valid explanation, this is Dark Souls not LOST

I think that the ones that disappear are the ones that are actual beings. The Sentinals and the Silver Knights are people, too.

My general rule is: If it drops a gold shiny, it disappears.

May be due to size, however Stone Giants, Channelers, and other beings of a large quality in Size do not disappear. Perhaps it is due to there connection with something in Lordran.

But this isn't true, stone knights drop gold shinys and don't disappear. Gold shinys are just rare drops that dont go away if the corpse is lost, because it would suck to loose a rare or unique drop like that. Most rare drops just happen to be from disappearing bodies.

Hydra disappears.

Hydra could be a minion of Seath.

Maybe one, but it is also found within Ash Lake, home of dragon creatures. The hydra in Ash Lake is different.

Which could still make it a minion of a god.

How so?

Its guarding Velka. Could be hers.

And who is Velka?
