Now, I've played this game, as I'm sure many of you have and for the life of me I can't see why this is. The best game of it's generation, maybe but best game ever - nah! Better than Final Fantasy VII, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and even Twilight Princess, its updated version. I could go on and on. Castlevania- Symphony of the Night. Not to mention Demon Souls & Dark Souls. I feel sorry for other game developers, they must be fed up of seeing this game top the poll every time. I know I am.

Best game ever...?
Sorry but I just don't get it. 'Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time' is consistently voted as the best game ever made by 'Edge' magazine, which, here in the U.K. fancies itself as the doyen of gaming magazines.

Re: Best game ever...?
What's really sad is that Ocarina of Time isn't even as good as Majora's Mask (the best Zelda game btw) which came out just 2 years later, had a slew of new mechanics, a very interesting story, a dark tone and above all THE MOTHAFUCKIN DANCING MASK!!!

It's nostalgia.
Same as saying FF7 or Baldur's Gate 2 are the best RPG ever made. Or that the only good games were those out there during the NES/SNES/Genesis era.

Re: Best game ever...?
Baldurs gate 2 is pretty damn nice, although I suspect it would have been surpassed had isometric party based RPG's not died out. FF7 was a good blend between old FF and new FF
I would not call them the best simply because I do not believe I am in a position to judge.

Re: Best game ever...?
I really enjoyed playing Ocarina of Time. I can see why it is called the best by so many people. For it's generation, it was unprecedented. Completely open, optional tidbits everywhere and it has universal appeal. I literally haven't met a single person who doesn't enjoy it, I doubt many games can boast that.
And the moment you walk onto Hyrule field for the first time, immense.
Really though, I hate judging games across generations, and even across platforms, since everything is so different, styles and trends change and developing capabilities means you simply cannot judge across all games ever.
I definitely think there isn't a better N64 game though, Majora's mask made some nice developments and Mario 64 was also a really good game, but I just think ocarina was better and in the long term, much more influential as a game than the other two.

Re: Best game ever...?
I loved Ocarina of Time (still own my original OoT N64 cartridge), it did things that at the time were unprecedented. And, sadly, it is still a much more complete game than much of the standard fare that comes out these days.
I think it's deserving of a place on the pantheon.

Its going to sound weird but my first real indepth video game experience (when I say indepth I mean comparing pac man to an actual story driven game) was with the Legend of Zelda :Oc Of Time. and when I played dark souls for the first time It had that same feeling that I got then just more grown up.

Re: Best game ever...?
They miss being young. They liked it when they had an 'easier' life. With that life, they had those games as a kid to entertain themselves. Now there old, and there tastes and their views are old, seeing somewhat repetition in different aspects of life, including games. They see the 'originals' to be better than the 'remakes', as they don't get the same feeling as before.
My favorite franchise is Starcraft, but the game has withered in quality when I played the new version, Starcraft 2, and saw the improvement. Sure the mechanics it follows are similar, and the feeling is not the same, but Starcraft 2 is a better game to me... Even if it still need it's balance tweaks

Re: Best game ever...?
I'm not saying FF7 and BG2 are bad games. Hell, I played the latter almost to the end, and I did so hating the AD&D mechanics every step of the road.
I'm just saying there is no such thing as a "best game ever".

Re: Best game ever...?
Agreed Azran, no way can you ever say one game outclasses every other game ever made.
In the face of time though, I think the early souls games are gonna be rather influential. At least I hope that becomes the case, the importance they bring back to games as pure gameplay experiences and atmospheric feel are really needed to be brought back in most games now.
Also Azran, there no extra line between the two soul of the lost lines in your sig, just to say

Yep, I agree. I wish the Souls games actually spawn a new genre.
And you are right!

I think it's a combination of 'The Emperor's New Clothes' and 'Rose Tinted Spectacles'. Wearing both at the same time is at the root of this.

Skies of Arcadia and Star Ocean 3 are my fovorites.
Windwaker is my favorite Zelda, then majoras mask, then ocarina of time. None of them get anywhere near my top 20 though.

I first started reading 'Edge' around 2001 and was a subscriber up until February this year. In 2001 'Edge' was a quality magazine with great cover art and features and the reviews were a reasonable guide.
It all started to go wrong in my opinion about 5 years ago when they decided to re-vamp the magazine (it wasn't broke, so why fix it?) One of my favourite columnists, Red Eye, was the first casualty, then Mr. Biffo. These were replaced gradually by columnists who, in my opinion, wrote mainly for themselves or other games journos. In fact I thought 'Edge'had lost sight of it's 'raison d'etre', in other words, us the gamers almost completely and had become more and more industry biased. This is the reason I cancelled my subscription.
