I dropped my white sign in the forest and was summoned as a Dark Spirit of Vengence. I spawned where i set my sign so it was a glitch

Lol, it happens, you can basically show up in someone's world as any kind of phantom regardless of how you tried to actually do it. Ex., someone can summon you via WSS only to have you appear as a red invader, or you can invade as a DW and appear as white or even a blue. Only one I've never seen is showing up as a sunbro if you weren't one to start. The usual rule of thumb is to take the hint and play as whatever you actually show up as.
Another fun feature is that it's possible to get more than 2 friendly summons this way.

I was doing some co-op with my friend the other day, and as soon as he summoned me into Blighttown we both saw that some other guy had been summoned too. We never saw the guy at first, and then my friend said he was getting tons of souls left and right like someone was killing things. By the time we got to the bottom of Blighttown everything was dead, and yet we never saw this guy. Only once we got to Quelaags Domain did we see this guy who was a Gold Phantom.
My guess is that he was a Darkwraith who tried to invade and somehow got forced to be a Gold Phantom. It was really weird, and things were a bit laggy too.
Unless of course it has become like my friend and I decided. Where Sun Bro's are getting so tired of not being called upon that they're starting to act like the Kool-Aid man. They just break down the walls of the game and force themselves into your world all like, "JOLLY CO-OPERATION!" like the Kool-Aid man screams "OH YEAH!"

This is awesome, as a faithful sunbro I would love this feature. Think of all the suspicious doorways around Lordran that would be ideal as sunbro only access points to break into people's worlds for mandatory jolly coop. I'd buy a $30 DLC just for this option.

This happened to me in Tomb of the Giants.
I invaded and was summoned on the otherside of the Tomb.
Needless to say the enemies literally right next to me slaughtered me.

I've done about 25 hours of co-op on PSN and my white sign turned me into a red invader one time. I've done somewhere around 600 hours of co-op on my XBox and it never happened.
