It's still listed on the wiki that it's location is 'currently unknown' so I think it's status quo. Think it can still only be obtained through questionable means.

What about that last miniboss before you enter the chasm? It drops the chainmail armor pieces, and also respawns. This is a long-shot, but have anyone tried farming it to see if it's some kind of armor dispenser?

That's a great idea. Kind of a fun fight, too. Wish they added a 2nd one though.
