Your opinion on math.

I had to make this topic due to my frustration with math. As it seems there is a huge variety in ages on these forums i believe it will make for a great discussion.

What exactly is it i want your opinions about? Well, here's the thing, i'm a 17 year old boy studying photography and journalism right now. I plan on becoming a photographer, however, the subject of which seems to be the primary target in not only my education, but everyone my ages education seems to be math. Now, i do really hate math, however i understand it's usefulness, but there's a line, and that line has been crossed by far. What have i been taught so far? I've been taught about such things as the binary system. And, correct me if i'm wrong, but i see no relation to the category of which journalism and photography lands at. We're adviced to study hard on this subject, but not the others? Understandable seeing as it's hard, but even then, shouldn't i feel like the subject that is most important, is the subject of which is wish to take use of in my line of profession in the future?

I just had to make this topic because it's been driving me crazy for too damn long, so what is your opinion on this whole matter? Please, do share.

Binary is useful for computers, and it doesnt matter what profession you go into computers will be important in a few years. Obviously it will probably be limited in journalism, but its always useful.

I should point out in addition to what I said, even in engineering I sometimes wonder when the hell I will need to use vector spaces.

Indeed, however keep in mind that i was only using that as a simple example. Allow me to put it this way, it was the first thing we were taught..LAST YEAR.

Dough you're studying engineering? I'm planning to study that as well, after my physics disappointment. I hate math too, because only way to get good at it is by practicing the exercises and I'm lazy as hell. Still I have a good head for understanding most of it.

I seriously think the schools should be prioritizing the subjects that are equivalent to what line of direction has been chosen. I swear to god, they're all just planning on making us *** crazy scientists. I'm a 100% positive that's the case.

It has far more uses and is used in more, what you'd call, high level jobs.

Every school/college has a obligatory math course. It's the same as us scientists taking Social Sciences/Literature. I prefer taking simple math instead of writing 10 pages literature essays.

Like i said, i understand it's usefulness, however enforcing it upon any sort of education is simply wrong. I can tell you right away, i won't be using it as a photographer as i've already had a taste of working as one, and the same goes for journalist. What my whole point is, is that i can't see why, even as useful as math may be, why it's placed so high in all schools/educations/professions. Especially when there are so very many professions that do not require it. If i wanted a profession that required math, i wouldn't have applied for photography and journalism. And the worst part of all is, we've got B math i believe, rather than C which is the easiest one. Just pointing it out. So all in all, my point is not that ''math sucks, remove it arghablargh!'', what i'm saying is ''why in every education, at every school?''. I was going to apply for a musical education before, however it was cancelled. Had i gone with it, i would still have had a whole damn lot of math on me, and math and music, not exactly that good of a combination, and just pointing out, i know math and music are related, kind of. I'm just saying, the thing i would have, and am studying at the moment, would not be useful as a musician either. Just an example.

Ouch I feel for ya, as someone who is studying double maths chemistry and physics I can say I dont blame you for not wanting to do it. I mean it pisses me off alot of the time xD and no, I dont see why you have to do it... infact you dont beyond age 16 here.

Put up with it? Erm I earned the nickname sleepy dan for sleeping through lessons and have only handed in 3 homeworks this year... that helps alot xD
(oh yeah and I spend alot of the lessons discussing video games)

Oh? Hah! Sounds better than what i spend my time doing on the lessons. I usually just sit there, looking at my screen while listening to music waiting the lesson out. Though right now i'm obviously on the forums.

I have taken 4 or 5 at once, considering physics major courses all math-related. It is no fun at all, and once I reached Quantum Mechanics, I said f*** my life, I'm dropping out of this sh!t. Also I have problems understanding linear algebra, mostly because you have to do extensive procedures to solve problems.

Being an architecture / civil engineering student I'm supposed to like math. I hate it.

Math can go suck a fat one as far as I'm concerned.

I can hardly believe that we all have that in common(sarcasm)!

Sadly, no matter what profession you are in you will need maths at some point or another. I'm a musician and I use maths everyday :/

Edit: Oh, and I like maths. Maths doesn't lie.

Off topic: I'm splitting up Photoshop on a school computer into 3 separate emails so I can get it at home. Theft FTW!

Edit: Oh and Aludil, I still haven't done that essay.

I understand that math will exist in every profession one way another, never said i didn't or that it was bad. What i mean is that i dislike the way the school puts math as the primary objective, even when you study something like me for example, that being photography and journalism. I will use math, that i understand. What they're teaching us right now though, i know for sure, i won't be using. But what bothers me the most is the fact that they put math in the center. I want to feel frustrated over the subjects that i need in my future profession. I want to have to work with it at home and stay after school because of it, not math. I don't want to have to feel ''fear'' (in lack of a better word)over a math test because it's too complicated, i want to feel that way about the subjects that i need for my education. The subject that i chose this education because of. That is the real reason to this whole topic.

I do indeed know that math is good, never doubted it(still hate it more than anything, and you can't do **** about it! :evil: ), though i believe that they aim too much on the subject.
