I've been cursed a few times. Most notably Sen's Fortress, Darkroot Garden, and most recently Kiln of the First Flame. I've been cursed in other areas too but most likely didn't notice it because someone killed off the gravelord before I saw the phantoms.
I actually used to think the message that appears when the curse is lifted was warning you that a curse had been placed, but it was the other way around.

I have apparently been cursed but never say any black phantoms in my world.
Multiple times after invading and killing the host, when I return to my world I have the "Phantoms have gone after the defeat of the Gravelord" message, but I don't think I have killed but a handful of Gravelords, and I have never invaded from through their sign.
I have only seen Black Phantoms once and that was when I invaded someone who was already infected.

On PS3, I get cursed quite often, and have invaded gravelords via their signs, but have never seen BPs. One explanation that seemed credible that folks were floating in here recently was that you are far more likely to get BPs if you are in NG+ and beyond. Both makes it slightly more "fair" since more experienced players are getting affected, and also explains the rarity for those of us who rarely go into NG+.

I'm cursed all the time, but I am yet to see a Black Phantom as a result of it. Come to think of it, I've not seen any Vagrants either! Not lucky I guess!

I've been cursed quite a lot but usually I don't know about it until that message pops up about the Gravelord. I've seen a couple of Black Phantoms though. One in the Parish and I actually nearly killed it and the other in the Forest at the bottom of the steps which was the first time I saw one. It was massive, I took one look and ran away.

Well, on my last play through I was playing offline since my internet is out of action for a while, I beat Nito, Then proceeded to Sens to go grab the Slumbering Dragon ring I missed, to help kill Seath, anyway as soon as I get to the first bridge two BP's, And I still have no Idea how they got there. :evil:

I saw a black phantom berenike knight the first time i proceeded to ng+. It was my second character i ever made for this game, and first time i ever played online. I thought it was just an additional enemy for ng+. I was not good at dodging back then, and the damage it dealt was simply too overwhelming and i had to stop playing for that day.
Since then, i've seen black phantoms fairly often. Like 1-2 times in a month. Usually at darkroot forest, undead burg (upper) or sen's fortress. They have always been ng+ or higher characters, so it definitely has something to do with it. I don't think it matters if it's ng+ or ++, but you can't see those things in regular ng. You can still be cursed though, and invade as a SoV to gravelord servants world.

I get cursed often, but have only seen the black phantoms in the Depths. Dredglings and one Butcher. That's all.

I've seen a lot of them. Mostly in Kiln, Burg and Anor Londo.

I see the "curse is going away" message a lot but I have never seen a BP. I've got one character into NG+++, one in NG++ and a couple in NG; and still have never come across a BP. I play on 360. I've seen maybe 2 Gravelord signs in all my playtime. It was early on, so I didn't invade.

It's only happened once or twice to me.
I really wish it would happen more often. Things like that keep the game interesting to me y'know? I don't think I'll ever truly be tired of the game, but the multiplayer stuff always seems to keep me around a little longer than I usually plan to during a session
