Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
The Gaping Dragon is probably as old as any other living dragons at the time that we play, since I don't think dragons have babies. Nor are they actually capable of making one if they could.

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
Then that leads me to this follow-up: What role did it play in the war fought between the dragons and Gwyn and his knights?

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
From his tail description he was important. So why is he still alive? Probably too important to be of fighting so he survived the killings and hid.

Why is so little known about such a powerful being?

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
his axe, one of the rare dragon weapons,
is formed by the tail of the Gaping Dragon,
a distant, deformed descendant of the
everlasting dragons.
The axe is imbued with a mystical power,
to be released when held with both hands.
Distant Descendant of the Everlasting Dragon... hm.
Alright then. Let me ask; Ask what Logan was after?
Also, the wonder of Gaping is not Dragon Like; He is more serpent to me. His head is familiar. I wonder where else we see it..
Rings and Men.

I doubt it was alive back then, since it was a "descendant" of the everlasting dragons. I think it's more recent, like the drakes/wyverns.

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
Indeed.
What... what did the director say? I can not remember. Ow ya.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXB_2QXhAwQ#
...
I also would like to consider some of the other individuals in the game. One, the Dragon Covenant, and two possibly Mildred. Her other butchers were not naked; could have made butcher armour for her. Don't you find it odd, how her shield is found in the Great Hollow?
Hm.
Gaping Dragon looks similar to the Python Men, yes? Indeed. It also has six arms; a trait of the cobras. Even its mouth is... cobra like. That is interesting. It also has a tendacy to spit acid... cobras at time do so as well.
Hm. Serpents, the imperfect dragons. One must wonder, why Seath has the Serpent Men in his domain? One must consider why the Channeler, follower of Seath, watches and Protects the Dragon King, Gaping Dragon. One must also consider... what are the ties of the Serpent Men to the fortress? Maybe there is a reason why such a Dragon of Serpent qualities exist.
Sigh, the experiments of the grandfather; the moonlight is always beside the sunlight at times... it takes reign once the sunlight disappears.

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
There's no way the gaping dragon is actually a dragon, it has to be a drake.
It doesn't seem powerful enough to be a deformed everlasting dragon.
The fact that it drops the dragon KING greataxe is kinda weird, but that's probably just poor wordchoice. Even if the gaping dragon was around during the age of ancients, it seems illogical that an imperfect dragon would be their king, or even anything close to that.

Watch the video linked to by Acidic_Cook. More specifically, this part https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXB_2QXhAwQ&feature=player_detailpage#t=357slalliman wrote:There's no way the gaping dragon is actually a dragon, it has to be a drake.

According to Miyazaki himself in the interview referenced, the Gaping Dragon is a deformed Everlasting Dragon. It mutated over time, becoming the creature we fought.

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
It's more serpent than dragon. The skin is that of serpent men; they don't have scales, see?
Dragon King doesn't have to rule dragons. It is the Dragon King, a king that is a dragon... Nothing says ruler of dragons nore rules over dragons. Just Dragon King. Similar to how Seath is a Duke. Not a Duke of Dragons.
Gaping is very similar tp the Cobras, in many ways... Just remember that Serpents are seen as the Imperfect Dragons (as told buy Serpent Rings), and is a symbol of the undead.

The Hydras have scales though, and they're not scaly at all. They're sking is downright smooth.

There necks are. Looking at there body, it looks similar to a shell though.
Everlasting Dragons have an exo-skeletal form, yes?

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
Perhaps something to consider also is that the gaping's scales are imperfect, like the serpents as mentioned. It is seemingly a very sick and ill creature that is heavily deformed, possibly the reason it doesn't drop scales is that it does...It's just nothing you want in your inventory.

The problem is, when its scales fall off it's not everlasting anymore... It's the scales that make the dragons immortal.Icegodzilla wrote:maybe when it got deformed its scales just fell off it

This theory seems okay, but.
Please explain to me why we pick up rubbish and dung pies then?

Perhaps they dissolve when it dies? The creature may not be very stable.

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
How is it even surviving down there? Depending on a diet of chosen undead who happen to work their way down to his lair seems like it's not a recipe for long-term success yet the creature has survived down there for untold millennia.

Re: How old is the Gaping Dragon?
Its a dragon literally mutated by hunger. I think thats exactly what its being doing for a millenium.
