Bad feelings about online for Dark Souls 2

I can't help but think that with the online servers for DkS2, we will be region locked but there will also be an online pass system (Bandai Namco does use this system). These in my mind will kill a large chunk of invasions and co-op, plus with servers we will probably lose online before DkS1 does. We need to find out if region locking and online pass is going to be implemented and discourage it to protect the size of the online community. I personally don't want online to be a ghost town like DeS EU servers.

If they don't region lock they might as well do P2P as the only benefits for having dedicated servers are:
1) More consistent summons/invasions as the server handles that aspect
2) Less lag due to restricting people to a region close to them physically.
There is no other reason to have dedicated servers, which is a big reason why I LOVE that Dark Souls doesn't rely on servers.

I am happy about getting dedicated servers. Playing DeS here in NA, made DkS P2P seem really crappy.

Even if the servers were region-locked, there's no reason a player couldn't manually configure which region he/she wanted to sign into that day.
Or make different profiles. Surely I'm not the only one that made a Japanese account just to download the Dark Souls wallpapers from the Japanese PSN.

the online pass isn't TOO big of a threat due to the fact that most of the fanbase may be preordering it and the NEW version of the game always includes an online pass. and its only like $5-$10 for those who wanna buy an online pass after buying a used copy for $5-$10 cheaper game. thus it's still about $60 so might as well buy a NEW copy lol

Pretty much, but at least that way the developers get their money.

I hate region locking. It's gonna *** over the dark souls 2 online for Eu players, and just accounting for lag when they're slashing probably 9/10ths of my online community isn't really an answer that cuts it with me.
If it is just for the online pass so they get more money, that will really rile me up. Wrecking online play just for a couple extra pounds here and there is awful. When a game is as popular as dark souls it'll sell millions of copies.. It's hardly gonna need an online pass to add to that, it's just not justifiable.
The summons are gonna be even worse next game too.. have fun getting summoned/a summon
This is coming from a guy who's of the PvE pursuation, i really feel for pvp oriented European players like spur and billy who'll have to put up with this ****.

If you buy new, then they don't get more money. If you buy used, then all they get is 10 bucks. Online passes are hardly about "more money", they're about making up for lost money.
And while I dislike the idea of region locked servers, I do kinda miss being able to play with my friends...

...You can play with your friends? I've never had issues long as you're smart with where you place summon signs.. always away from the main online traffick is the key to it.
We don't really need to get into whether the money motivation is right here. You think they deserve money for something they've already sold once and I don't, what really matters is that they're crippling the online population, so unless dark souls II sells about 10 million copies, I'm losing 90% of my potential online action. Are FROM gonna compensate me for that?

Yeah, after waiting for like 10 mins to shuffle through the servers. And getting invaded while waiting for a trade sucks.
"something they've already sold once"
And? why should they care if they already it sold once, when they could have sold it twice? Used games rob them of potential customers. Why should retailer make money off a game they didn't create?

...Because they sold their ownership of that file with selling the product.
I'm not gonna debate this point more it'll just derail the thread, but I'll leave you with this little thought; gaming is the only business that has made people pay extra money to the companies when purchasing something second hand.

Don't you mean publishers. Developers have already been paid or are on the payroll.
Also online pass stinks as a form of revenue. Instead of them developing new stuff to extend the life of their product, they restrict a feature of a game. No matter how many excuses you make for yourself, players restricted from going online means less players. How many of you will stick around for PvP if invasions and co-op are half an hour in between? It sucks waiting around that long to be summoned in DeS and that free with region locking. This won't have a match making system like they have in other games so don't think online pass won't effect it because it will, maybe not in first few months but it will when people start selling off their copies and people that by it used will just do the single player.

Good point, steve. The souls series is first foremost, hook, line and sinker a PvE game, and having the online content isn't at all necessary as FROM will doubtless attempt like in the last game to simulate the online component in offline with npc invasions and summons..
I think I just found how they'll make the game more accessible, NPC phantom summons in every area.. For extra easy mode, every one of those summons is tarkus

If you aren't willing to directly pay a company for their games, then don't play their games at all. It's pretty simple.
What are you talking about? They don't get squat from second hand sales. To them it's the same as Piracy. If I make 100 games, for 100 people, but only 50 buy and then share that with the other 50, then I just lost money on 50 games, that I could have sold otherwise.
Publishers/ developers, whoever it is that gets the money. It's better than it going to retailers.

Perhaps they can make it so that you and I choose which server you or I log into each time you or I get on?

I'm talking about online passes sloth, no other industry has created a method of making customers give them money despite said customer purchasing something they no longer own. In my opinion it should be illegal as really they're selling you squat. A key to unlock something you rightfully should get with the game in the purchase anyways. It's like you buying a second hand house and then having to pay an extra 10% to get a key to the front door.
Now unless you need me to explain to you my point in even more words i'd rather talk just about the region locking here, as I trust in FROM to not money grub enough to use an online pass system

But they do still own it, they may not own the disc, but they remain the owners of the contents on the disc. It's their intellectual property. You're paying them for the right to play the contents of the Disc. That is a right that they and only they can bestow upon you.
Read the EULA. It makes it pretty clear that to them selling a game you already played is piracy, as far as they're concerned.

Evidently you need to go tell the police to go shut down gamestop, amazon and ebay for allowing the highly illegal resale of the product, i'm sure it would go down well
That regulation thing makes me laugh, it's almost as absurd as when people were declaring on their facebook that their posts are copyrighted thinking thats all it takes to stop them being used

It isn't legal enforceable, but neither is an agreement between two friends(unless there's a contract). If you don't agree to their terms of service, then you'll just have to live without their service. No one is forcing you to buy their games.

I invite you to take it to pm, otherwise frankly we should drop it and stop derailing the thread. Please.

It's a good job the European courts ruled not that long ago that you can sell your used digital copy even if the terms of service say you can't.

I've run out of things to say already
Stevesweed: if thaw law wont take steps to enforce their rules, then why shouldn't developers/publishers? it's what that whole thing about PS4 maybe not playing used games is about.

Okay, so i'll ask you a question.
Is region locking really justifiable when it only reduces lag but it severly diminishes the online population?
As I've said already, I think not, but i wanna hear more perspectives on the matter really

Honestly, Lag can be pretty bad at times... however it's nothing that would warrant region locking. If you lose because of lag, then just brush it off and get over it. There's not much you could have done about it.
