This is my first-timer though i've been reading silently for a while.
Just stumbled across a possible solution:
Might be the effect of beeing cursed.
First, it is prevented by wearing a Rare Ring of Sacrifice
Second, its quite a challenge to go on half of your max HP without dying again and losing your bloodstain.

Aww, i see now. Reading carefully would be a hint to do. By the way, GrinTwist already mentioned the Rare Ring of Sacrifice.
Edit: Maybe it's that branch up in Blighttown that kills me every time i want to cross it backwards and once it did, my bloodstain is on its deadly end... Man i hate that thing.
