Gestures and their meaning Empty Gestures and their meaning

Post by Sentiel Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:21 pm

I had an interesting conversation with my friends about the meaning of the Prostration gesture and it made me wonder how people view different gestures and what meanings they asociate with each of them.

Bow Showing respect to my opponent in duel, before and after the fight.
Proper Bow Pleased to meet you gesture. Used when greeting host as a phantom.
Wave Waving a farewell upon parting, or to gain ones attention to me.
Hurrah Victory! Perfect after beating a difficult boss.
Joy Happiness. Celebrating something nice, or funny. Also, showing approval when someone does something correctly. Of course, also used for victory.
Shrug Whatever. I mostly use this when something goes wrong, or to show disagreement.
Well What is it Come at me bro! Or opening my arms to welcome a friend. I never saw any malice, or taunting in this gesture unless I was told that people use it with those intentions.
Prostration Aplogozing for doing something bad, or unwanted.
Beckon Come here! I mostly use this to make the person come to me, or to stop goofing around.
Point Up Showing direction, but can also be used as sign for victory.
Point Forward Showing direction. Perhaps can be used to choose an opponent, like "You're next!"
Point Down Asking/ordering someone to wait. Trying to show a dropped item. I can see some taunting in doing this after a fight, over someone's dead body. This is the only gesture that if done after a fight ticks me off a bit.
Prayer Repeated use of this can be viewed as a t-bag, other than that I really don't see any meaning to it. Could be used to make someone think you're casting a Miracle?
Look Skyward Facepalm, for situations when epic fail is all over the screen.
Praise the Sun Sunbros for life! Although popular, I really don't see any meaning to it. I sometimes do it randomly, just for fun though.

There other two, that aren't exactly gestures. The animation your character does when it's unable to cast a spell and unable to use an item.

    No Spell  Showing embarrassment.
No Item  Showing anger. I mostly use this when Summoning failed message pops up.

Is the way I translate gestures wrong from the general meaning they have for Dark Souls community?
What meanings do you give to each gesture?

I think all mp games need to have gestures now! They're just so convenient.

At the very least, I want these (in every game!):

Proper Bow Wave Beckon Joy Shrug Look Skyward Prostration

And Praise the Sun because it's like a silly in-joke.

With my clerics builds I use Prayer instead of Bow after fights, seems to fit well

Gestures and their meaning 3149687655 I always bow after a fight, there must always be a gentleman even if the other is not. Unless I am in the painted world then I use this Gestures and their meaning 1447589260 to show my administrator power to welcome you to a cold hell. Expect thisGestures and their meaning 2707236321 when something pisses me off.

    Prostration

To me this shows respect like any other bow. It makes me feel like some buddist monk ninja folk.

    Shrug

I use this when something strange happens like someone sitting idle for a few minutes, or for saying something like,
"Eff it, I dont know whats going on. Lets just play."

I used to always Proper Bow after a fight, but now it'll depend on both mine and my opponent's performance (I still always bow before the fight though). If he was cheap, or made me resort to cheap tactics out of boredom annoyance or frustration, he'll get the Look Skyward. If he tried to gank and got schooled, Well What is it. If it was a good fight, I'll proper bow again, and if I want to apologize for something (most of the time for misunderstandings, like when I'm trying to duel with my Pierce Shield and my opponent thinks it's an invitation to equip a crappy shield for weapon and not fight me properly) Prostration. The majority of the time, though, I just stand there, because I feel like the fight wasn't even worthy of a gesture...

Beckon - It's quite obvious already, but i use it to tell someone to follow me or to come closer.

Point Forward - To point. Ex. if i get invaded by an honourable invader and i have another phantom present, i would point at my phantom so that the invader would duel him.

Hurrah - Victory or joy. I use it for more serious roleplay too. Ex. roleplaying as a Silver Knight, Black Knight or Artorias.

Bow - A proper bow used before a duel or to greet someone. Also a way of saying thank you or farewell.

Joy - Joy. I use it for less serious and more fun-based gameplay.

Shrug - Confusion, irritation or just a way of saying i don't care.

Wave - A more laidback way of saying hi or bye. I usually use it at someone from a distance rather than bowing.

Praise the Sun - Praise the Sun! The proper greeting for a sunbro. Also a secret code used by my sunbrethren.

Point Up - I use this either to point up in the air, to show that i'm victorious or to say that i won't retreat.

Point Down - Pick up item, looking for summonsign or show some manners to an invader or host that didn't play by "the rules of honour".

Look Skyward - Facepalm. I use it if someone retreats or assumes that just because i have a summon with me i'm a ganker. That or if someone tries to act all badass and then f*ck up. So a facepalm, pretty much.

Well What is it - More or less a way of bragging or hugging. I also use it if someone acts like a coward.

Prostration - Showing respect or pleading for your life.

Proper Bow - An overly used bow that i would never use.

Prayer - Roleplaying based emote used before a boss, as a greeting or before a duel.

I also use the shrug-like gesture made when you can't use an item. Ex. using Estus Flasks while being a phantom - A way of showing that i'm annoyed or frustrated.

When you're out of Estus Flasks, and your character holds the empty bottle - A way of saying that i'm out of Estus Flasks, duh.

The strong attack done when you use a Pyromancy Flame or a Talisman - Dancing.

I always bow unless I'm on my Follower, which is never now-a-days. I used to point upwards towards Quelaag's domain, but now I just bow to every opponent, unless they're a douche. Then I'll just kill them and leave. They don't deserve the satisfaction of seeing my frustration. That's what most of them want, anyway. To win and get you pissed, or lose and get you pissed.

I use the Gestures and their meaning 639795459gesture to indicate the host should summon another phantom at the certain spot.
Or if I'm the host, I usually wait until I have two summons (the more the merrier). But if it takes too long, I try to let the phantom know that no other summons are there:

This is pretty good idea, I will start doing this as well.
It always feels awkward when my phantom is just standing there while I wait for the delayed Summoning Failed.

    Always.

Though I think by this point in the game's life-cycle most players know what you're doing when you're just standing there not doing much.

I always thought Prostration was an insult from my interactions with people. Like "Wow, that was so terrible that I actually hope you get better."

    Guess I was wrong.

after beating a ganker i turn my back to them as they fall and Proper Bow moon them

i always Prayer if i get into a match where i clearly outclass the other player … what? it does happen, i swear

if i win by the skin of my teeth i Prostration as a way to say "i'm not worthy", i also use Prostration if i get re-summoned by a host that i let die by mistake, again saying "i'm not worthy"

before entering a boss fight i will Hurrah as a way to say "let's do this"

i Point Up to salute the host if they do something particularly awesome … i sorta wish the character would pull out a beer stein for this one "cheers buddy"

i use the Look Skyward gesture during those facepalm moments when i have no idea what just happened

i Shrug when i have no idea what the heck is going on

i don't really ever use the other gestures that much.

I play on PC, so it's really easy to try to summon, and while I'm waiting for it to either succeed or fail, to just send them a quick message. silly

I also had a keyboard hooked up to my PS3 to do the same thing before the PC release. I find it better to do that than to use any gesture haha!

Not everybody speaks English, also, on PS3, it takes some time to go to menu, write the message and return to the game. The process is held up by the console, which takes a lot more time to complete these simple tasks than normal, especially if you're playing online. It can also get stuck in returning to the previous menu for a long time of 10-60 seconds.

What PS3 are you playing on? sad I know it can be kinda slow, but I used to use my keyboard for that all the time. =/

Also, I live on the west coast, I think I've met like 2 japanese players on my PS3, none on my PC. I should be getting more, but I guess not Shrug
