Allo folks how are you all doing? Yeah I've been pretty absent, I've had a falling out with Dark Souls (still own my copy) and I just can't get back into it right now. This place is still a great community and worth dropping by and talking to though, figured I'd share a story.

So I've found myself busy on a personal project, having been a fan of modifying AoE2, TA and heck most strategy based games I play I at some point fiddle with the inner workings. A few days ago I peaked at Civ5's inner workings and found out how easy it is to change the database into what you want it to do, like literally 90% of the game is on a silver platter to change. Now it may be XML but I love programming and I've spent most of the past week tinkering and writing in my own XML codes, changing it in ways that I would like to see it in or even just trying out various hilarious things, the kick in my butt is LUA scripting which I have never been good with and the program packaged that handles that I haven't really gotten into.

So the downside is that my roommates don't want my modifications to mess with their gameplay and that presented a challenge of putting all of my changes into one pack so that they can be selectable from the mod menu. Now they do have a program to handle the packaging which I'm thankful for, but hilariously it wasn't as easy as just sticking the modified XML pages I have. Oh for heavens sakes no, I have to write, from scratch, my own XML code outlining what I want changed. My god, I forgot the saying that programming is 10% work 90% debugging, but I love it. So it may have taken the past two days of tinkering to figure out how to get things to work before I start mass writing, but holy crap I kid you not after many game crashes, a few complete reinstalls, and heck even a map redo since some reason it was broken I have been reminded why I wanted to get into game development in the first place.

So that's my story, I do hope that I'll be able to get back into Dark Souls and I am very excited that there is a good possibility of DLC for consoles and quite possibly some form of sequel for the Souls Series since it seems From Software had nothing to do with the PC content.

Hi Whknight, I know what you mean in regards to having a falling out with Dark Souls, I have probably played 15 hours in the past couple months, and most of that has been upgrading items to hopefully update the wiki on when I find the time and patience to do it. You should help with the upgrades again , Yukon is giving it a shot right now, so it won't just be you and BLA1NE if you both start up again.

Yes a hoplite was a Greek military soldier way back when. They utilised a spear or pike wielded with a round shield which could be large or small. Like what the spartans look like on 300 is a good example, except you know with armour, not just showing their manly steroidal chests.

Did hoplites wear armor? Armor wasn't as popular during that time period

I've always seen them in bronze breastplates or scale, Wikipedia also has them like that in pictures, however if you scroll down into equipment it says that for Greeks at least it was not standardized and they used what they could afford so that only those who where middle class and above would usually be seen in such atire. I imagine if there was standardization they would be groupped as heavy infantry and be clad in bronze breastplates, more so if they were from Sparta. Even then no one in their right mind would run around like in 300, at best they had padded leather, which actually does provide pretty good protection, if they could not afford metal armor.

Yeah. There was an article recently about a recovered Greek shield where they knew a lot about the owner based on how much it would have cost to make. I think Tolvo is phalanxing us. He's made hoplite references all over
