There is no best greatsword, it's personal preference, but I'd say either the Claymore or Bastard Sword. Bastard is the strongest greatsword outside of the Artorias Greatswords but Claymore has that thrust which is extremely useful. They have the same moveset if you two-hand them.

The Claymore is the best Greatsword in the game, but Fire is the weakest elemental upgrade path. If you have points in Strength or Dexterity +15 is the best upgrade path. If not, Lightning or Chaos.

If the claymore feels weak get yourself a zweihander, because the greatswords don't get much stronger than the claymore.

yep, but in terms of pure damage they're tough to beat, and have the best moveset of the ultra weapons, and if you fight unlocked you can easily become unparriable and punish roll bs attempts.
