oh come on hehehe one handing ultra greatswords anyways but i gotta use a shield for defense or parry

1handing is great for fending off spears (just turtle until they give you an opening) and to parry (zweih parries do absurd amounts of damage) and the dead angle angle is wider in 1h, making it good for the odd surprise hit (its easier to punish though, so use it sparingly.) Its not necessay, but its useful for sure, especially as the roll r1 is the same as 2h so fast rolling 1handers have a fairly low risk fairly quick 1h poke in addition to the benifits of a shield

The best greatsword is the Moonlight Greatsword.

chaos unless you're at 27 str/40 dex (+15) or divine for a build with just the requirements and 50 faith.

theres 3 options of the zwei mentioned hmmm to me raw is disappointing ill go with lightning

raw blows, that was a joke (at least I hope)

while chaos is dependant on humanity and vulnerable to flash sweat, it tends to edge out lightning, though admitedly the difference isn't really a big thing (the elemental versions deal roughly 350 damage per hit either way)

Oh, while I'm at it the biggest flaws in the MLGS are 2fold.

1: its pure magic. This is a bonus most of the time, but it means magic barrier and great magic barrier ruin it.

2: The rolling r1 is a chop instead of a thrust, its slower, doesn't get counter damage (both because its magic and because its not a thrust) and is more easily parried (because its slower and telegraphs better)


On topic, I'd say the best greatsword is the claymore, and this lies in the versatility of its moveset more than anything else (though its not weak by any means.) The claymores biggest weakness is split scaling, meaning its full potential is only realized by quality builds.


There is no health decrease. Thats the chaos blade, a specific katana, not the chaos upgrade path.

The best greatsword all depends on your stat layout. The following weapons can be considered the "best" for their type (note that all these are assuming fully upgraded Normal Path; not elementals or other, unless otherwise stated):

Man-Serpent Greatsword. It scales purely in STR, letting you dish out its full power by investing in only 1 stat. It is probably the most potent greatsword due to the low investment required.

Claymore. It scales in STR and DEX, so you must pull out more stats for it. However, it has the most versatile and lethal moveset of all the greatswords.

Flamberge. It is the only Greatsword that heavily scales with DEX. It is also the only one to inflict bleed and copies the Curved Greatsword moveset in certain attacks. It is also deadly because it can switch from Heavy Attack to Light Attack faster than any other greatsword.

Moonlight Greatsword. It is the only greatsword scaling in INT, making it usable strictly to magic-centric characters. In addition, it is the only greatsword that is capable of ranged combat.

Greatsword of Artorias. If and only if you're of a tremendously high level that has maxed most, if not all stats. Even then, its usage is only recommended in the Catacombs and Tomb of Giants for its effect to inflict 40% bonus damage to Undead.

The best gs 2 me would have 2 be the claymore strong moveset good poise break high damage even when it isnt buff. There might be a better gs pve wise then the claymore but for sure clay is the best pvp wise

Greatsword is the best (ultra) greatsword for three reasons.
1.Tarkus
2.YOLO
3.Swag

you seem to be confused op. elemental upgrades are always really weak when compared to +15 upgrades. so if you want to unlock a weapons full potention you HAVE to level its scaling stat(s). it sounds like this is what you're looking for:
40str = man serpent greatsword +15. awesome balance of good moveset, hig dmg and low stat investment, high weight being it's only disadvantage.
16str/40dex = flamberge +15. low dmg output but good dead angles and combos.
27str/40dex = claymore +15. best moveset of the greatswords but heavy stat investment required. 1hand moveset suffers due to missing str, go to 40str/40dex to fix this.
16str/10dex/40int = moonlight sword +5. magical dmg only and unique projectile R2s make this a very good weapon.
also there is the abyss sword, but thats in the dlc.
your next step should be to pick one of the above swords, make it +15 and get the correct stats. (and then tell me if you'll ever go elemental upgrade again ;P)

Flamberge also does 300 bleed damage as well!

Claymore is great, I was going to upgrade it to +15 but I felt like I needed a good lightning weapon at the time I got to Anor Londo, so now it is at +4 lightning dealing around 500 damage.. great moveset as mentioned as well!

Zwei I have at Fire +5 dealing 468 per shot, but only use that for certain events and area's/fights.. it is rather heavy though

Not sure if you have or seen the Murakumo (sp) from Shiva after you kill him or buy it from him.. That is a good idea for a weapon as well! Its a curved Greatsword

I will on NG+ get the Claymore again and max it out to +15 normal to see what it does on my build when I get there and the same goes for a few other weapons!

Any "best" weapon is determined by your stats and personal preferences.

Int-MLGS
Dex-Flamberge
Str-MSGS
Quality-Claymore

GSoA is a beats, all of them, but they require high stats to wield properly.
GLGS has good range and damaga, but useless R2s and does't scale, nor can be buffed.
OGS can be buffed and has nice AoE, but it's short and again, doesn't scale.

If I had to pick, it would be either Flamberge, Claymore, or MLGS.
Flamberge has bleed, increased Poise damage on R2s and it can dead angle like crazy.
Claymore is very practical and has great moveset. It's damage is also top notch. It may seem weak to you, but then you only have to learn to combo with it. Just like with all of these weapons.
MLGS does pure Magic damage, so it's impossible to fully block, but on the other side, it gets it will become useless if you face someone with GMB. It is also very long, has insane phantom reach and if you master it's R2 attacks you will be very hard to defeat.

I choose my greatswords depending on PvP or PvE.

for PvE I use a crystal +5 greatsword or a greatsword +15. its 2handed strong attack has quite a range, is good for dispersing mobs, and does about 1025 damage on a counter (STR 48), 1175 dmg if I use pine resin.

for PvP I use Zwei +15. I usually stick to either normal or crystal upgrades as they can be buffed and scale with stats.

could someone please explain in detail what dead angling is?
