    Angering NPCs Empty Angering NPCs

Post by Sines Sat Jul 13, 2013 4:46 am

So, I just beat the Taurus demon on my first playthrough. Good times, I guess, but for one minor problem. While searching the area around the campfire when I got back to it, I found the Undead Merchant.

Well, I only found out he was a merchant after I accidentally stabbed him and looked up what I had done on the wiki.

I really didn't mean to. I went back to the campfire to rest there, to see if that would reset him... not so much. I ended up killing him in self defense. And now I find that he's the only vendor of repair powder?

    *ugh*

First off, is there any way to 'de-aggro' NPCs? It's just way too easy to accidentally stab them, especially since they don't call THAT much attention to themselves amidst all the less friendly undead.

Second, how problematic is this? I'm not that far into the game, and I now have a better understanding of it so it wouldn't be a terrible time to start a new character. Bear in mind, I didn't purchase items off him, then kill him when he had served his purpose. I just killed him, no purchases. Whoops >_>

Anyway, thoughts on that would be appreciated. Also, since you're here, what are the benefits for being in human form? 1 humanity that is wasted at death is a bit expensive, and the only use I've seen so far is to kindle the fire.

First of all, whilst he is a useful vendor, it's not a huge problem that you killed him. In the future, if you accidentally aggro an NPC, speaking to Velka (the dude after the Undead Parish boss) will allow you to 'absolve your sins' (for a price of course), thus resetting any aggro'd NPCs to their normal state.

Also, The blacksmith in the Undead Parish will sell you a Repair Box, which allows you to repair weapons and armour whilst resting at a bonfire, effectively removing the need for repair powder(unless you need it for PVP). The blacksmith in the Parish also sells a variety of early-game weapons, so once you reach him, you should be set.

The benefits of being in human form are that you can kindle bonfires, be invaded, invade, summon, and be summoned. As you are still early in the game on your first playthrough, you probably wont be doing much invading, but summoning phantoms to help you through a level can be very useful, as can being summoned into other player's worlds to help them, thus teaching you how to deal with an area.

Also, there are a few NPCs who can be summoned throughout the game at certain areas, and you have to be human to be able to summon these as well. To become human, you need to 'reverse hollowing" whilst you have at least one humanity in your bar.

To invade, you must use one of the following items which can be accessed as you progress through the game; :red-orb: :blue-orb:

    To be summoned; :white-stone: :red-stone:

You cannot summon anyone when you have your summon sign down, so if you want to summon somebody, make sure to cancel any summon signs you may have placed previously. only one can be placed down at a time, and any subsequent placings will simply replace the previous.

To summon somebody, stand over their summon sigh (looks like a glowing word on the ground) and follow the prompts. white writing is for a friendly summon, but red writing is people who want to PVP, and they will not help you progress through the level, but instead try to kill you.

If you have any more questions or need clarification, feel free to ask happy

You can de-aggro NPCs by absolving your sin.  When you beat the boss in the Undead Parish (the area right after the Taurus Demon) a very creepy guy (Oswald) will show up after you ring the bell, talk to him and you'll get the option to absolve sin.  It costs 500 souls per soul level to absolve sin, but you'll get plenty for killing the boss so don't worry about it.

The Undead Merchant sells some equipment that can be useful to new players, but most of the gear he sells can either be bought or farmed, or becomes obsolete later.  The only exceptions are repair powder (as you said), the Orange Soapstone and Lloyd's Talismans (unless you have DLC).  It's not that big of a deal unless you use a weapon that has a special R2 (they reduce weapon durability).  The Lloyd's are really only needed for doing invasions (there is one other use, but it's not even necessary) -- and it's probably not a bad idea to wait till after your first playthrough to try invading, anyway.  And, the orange soapstone is not a big deal, period.

You have to be human to summon help, kindle, do most types of invasions or be invaded.  Keep in mind the game has some NPC invasions you still need to be alive to trigger.  Not only should you experience this part of the game, but the NPCs drop armor and weapons... and give souls and humanity, of course!

Another useful item the Undead Merchant has available for purchase is the resident key (perhaps the only way to acquire it) and the bottomless box. BB can be bought later before Blighttown.

Resident key is helpful if you're a mage.

I was going to mention that, but according to the wiki he drops the residence key when killed.  So OP should have it.  But, yes OP if you don't have the residence key and want to make a mage -- you should start over.

I ended up making a mage and am enjoying the game more on this character. Probably rather natural given my better understanding of the system. I wasn't exactly very far in the game, so if I would like to play that character again, I'll just reroll.

Right now, it's a Sorc, with plans to use an Enchanted Falchion for a basic weapon. Just to clarify, harder to find weapons aren't always better, just (essentially) pre-upgraded, correct? I think some weapons are clear superiors (Falchion is just a better scimitar, but with slightly higher stat requirements), but I get the idea that a large variety of the weapons in each general category are meant to be roughly equivalent in power when fully upgraded, with exceptions primarily for the simplest weapon (which usually has a counterpart that is basically the 'good' version of that weapon), and for certain weapons with high base power but poor scaling (which are good in the early game, or if you just need a weapon of that type but aren't investing stats in it, like with Crossbows).

Still trying to figure things out, and I'm not too far through the game. I'm sure I'll pick up more and more and when I get around to making my Hunter, I'll probably know what I need to know.

You're pretty much right. Weapons are designed to be balanced, so that there is not one weapon of each type which is clearly superior. There are also definitely 'good' and 'bad' versions of some weapons, such as the Falchion and the Scimitar, Longsword and Shortsword, Rapier and Mail Breaker, etc. Also, weapons which are harder to get like the Black Knight and Silver Knight DO start with a higher AR(attack rating) but because of scaling end up being roughly on par with everything else.

Just to avoid cluttering with extra threads, I'll ask this here...

Where can I get a Falchion? Parts of the wiki say it can be dropped by any skeletal swordsman, but others suggest they have to be in the catacombs. Is that the case, or can I just farm it from the Firelink Graveyard?

The falchion skeletons in the Firelink Graveyard will drop it, but it's quite a rare drop, so farming it might take a while.

There's one in lower blighttown on a corpse with the Wanderer set, that's likely the best place to quickly run to to grab one near the start of the game.
